A teenager in Florida is in a medically induced coma following a horrifying accident on New Year’s Eve.
Authorities tell WFOR that 14-year-old Layne Chesney suffered third-degree burns across most of her body while roasting marshmallows at a friend’s house.
“My daughter has sustained burns over 95 percent of her body,” Leigh Chesney, Layne’s mother, told WFOR. “She has suffered a lot of disfiguring injuries.
Family members say Layne was roasting marshmallows at a friend’s house to make s’mores.
“When the flames went out, one of the children or her, I do not know the complete story, accidentally or purposefully, put more gas to the fire,” Chesney said. “An explosion occurred and she was enveloped in flames.”
She was rushed to an area hospital, but family members say they are simply hoping that she will survive.
“The only part of her body that was not burned was the bottom of her feet,” she said.
Kids [and adults] do stupid stuff. Accidents happen. Armchair judgementalists post stupid stuff.

Terrible. I burned my arm and hand when I was young. Painful. Can’t imagine 95% of the body. That poor little girl.
I think you misspelled azzhole, they really shouldn't drink and post. I think that's the explanation for such a hateful comment on childs tragic injury.

It is awful. I’m sure the technology and medical care has advanced exponentially for burn treatment since our youth.
It is a long, long road. I recall laying in bed for weeks and weeks; and to add insult to injury, the Achilles tendons in my heels atrophied; then I had to learn how to walk again. That is another story in itself.
Kids do stupid stuff yes but we did not do this this stupid when we were their age. We knew better.
Two days ago I was preparing to cook my son some French fries. As I was lowering the fryer basket, it slipped from my hand and splashed 400 degree oil under my arm and wrist. The pain was intense. My skin is now deep red and blistered. I’m anxious about it healing without infection and eventual scarring. What this girl is suffering makes me ashamed for my own feelings. There but for the grace of God...
Yet I post something about people freezing to death and everyone here makes jokes on that. Yea somehow that was funny.
No I’m just stating that these kids are overwhelmingly stupid and for the life of me can’t figure out why.

Entirely unnecessary. A charcoal fire can be ready to cook on in fifteen minutes using only paper and a wood fire can be blazing in ten minutes using only wood.

From another source. She was at a house with her 18 yo friend and his parents when she picked up the container and poured the gasoline.
Truly sorry for that. I’m not sure how big of an area, but even “minor” burns can be intense.
Not sure if you have put anything on it, but I have heard calendula gel/cream is good. And I did use it on my son long ago when he got a severe sun burn.

You probably right about that. For charcoal, I use an electric starter. Still, I would never use gasoline for a wood fire. It seems to be more volatile than the other fuels. More vapors.
The easiest way to start a charcoal fire is with an old coffee can. You put air holes in the bottom, all the way around the bottom of the can, some old newspaper in the can with charcoal on top. It acts like a chimney without all the carcinogens you get in petroleum. Youtube has videos of how to do it.
BTW if you have a problem starting the fire, take an old hair dryer and use it to blow on the coals. You’ll have coals in 3 minutes.
