For those who haven't read it, the novel by Caleb Carr is on my top ten list for great period drama combined with crime thriller. I could almost smell the streets of 1890's New York and it was scary as H#%%. The book was so good, I am a little worried if the TV series will live up to expectations. I believe it is starting on the 22nd on TNT.

They so rarely do. Loved the book, too.
Is this based on the Caleb Carr novel from the 1990s?
Yes
“gruesome murders of boy prostitutes”
No thanks.
I read that when it came out.
Yes
The copyright stated 1994. I decided to review the book (first 15 pages) on Amazon since I haven’t read it. The sample was surprising. Writing styles have changed a lot since then.
The streets smell the same urine and s***!
No they smelled more of pee and poo back then. Remember people were still using horses for transportation. And the air was thick with coal dust.
I'll see your "No thanks" and raise you "Hell no".
The book was very good. It looks like the TV show is going to have as much disturbing stuff in it as the book. The audiobook version is excellent by the way.
Thanks.
I read the book when it first came out; so, it has been a while. What I remember is how wonderful a job the author did in transporting me to that time period. His descriptions of the city and people and the places they inhabited was quite good. I only barely remember the crime part of the book, I was so enthralled with the detail of the time period.
Agreed. I like how he used real people in their real jobs at the time (Roosevelt as Police Commissioner, if memory serves) and a few others. Almost like it wasnt fiction.
