I wish this hymn, co-written by the great Northern Baptist hymn writer and singer George C. Stebbins, was in our Methodist hymnal. The singer, Henry Burr--arguably the Elvis Presley of his day--is accompanied by a harmonium, a small organ popular in the late nineteenth-early twentieth century.

There Is a Green Hill Far Away--Henry Burr (1905)

You would have liked our service today. We also sang “Angels, We Have Heard On High” and the choir did Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus.”

Beautiful Dreamer? Does that work? Clint Walker (1:49)

I LOVE that tune - I used to serenade my infant son with a lullaby based on that American Classic composed by the very brilliant (and underrated) Stephen Foster.

Happy New Year to all y’all!

Thank you! Now playing. Had heard of it but didn't remember the music, just have seen the title many times.

I used to play those old 78's on my grandmother's Victrola. Wish that hadn't gotten away after she died.

Another one I spent a lot of time tracking down was one hymn sung at Princess Di's funeral, never had heard that one before and the choir was marvelous. The King of Love My Shepherd Is. Adaptation of the 23rd Psalm. I think.

The organ in the next one, I taught myself to play it in a cheater manner, melody on top, chords in left hand, and did learn some basic pedals. Sold that, was too big. I have an Alessis QS8 I never play, big and heavy, wanted something lighter, got a Yamaha, am disappointed in that because it doesn't have a chord generator like a cheaper Casio one I used to play for hours did.

Yes I would. like the old days. I loved that Angels one, we sang it in school in chorus (back when we could perform Christian songs). I'd probably know the Mozart one if I heard it but can't think of the music.

We used to have a wonderful choir at church. Now it's I don't know what, geared to younger people I guess. I left and joined the Catholic church, tell flat on my face, but won't go back to the Methodist church, have happy memories of most of it though.

Might enjoy visiting yours though.

When I was a kid the family always had Guy Lambardo on the television and when he was over the station ran a Harold Lloyd comedy into the late hours. Eventually that kind of music disappeared from the air so I watched a Grateful Dead New-Years Concert on Yourube, (I’ve got one on now) and about five or six years ago I discovered Radio Dismuke’s New Year Special, which I highly recommend. From their website...

“Radio Dismuke will ring in the new year in all five continental United States time zones with our eleventh annual New Year’s Eve Broadcast. Joining Dismuke will be Eddie The Collector, as well as Erik, Connor, Dustin and gabe who will take turns spinning great 78 rpm and 80 rpm records from their respective collections. 2018 also marks the 100th anniversary of the year 1918 so we will play a few records from that year as well. We will also play a rare 15 minute radio broadcast that originally aired live over the Mutual Broadcasting System from the lobby of the Crazy Water Hotel in Mineral Wells Texas in 1937.

The broadcast starts at 10:00 pm tonight and runs through 4am tomorrow morning. For those who have other plans for New Year’s Eve the broadcast will replay in continuous rotation throughout New Year’s Day.

Next up will be the the Blues Brothers Live as recommended by A Fool in Paradise in post #7 and somewhere today or tomorrow I will also do Pink Floyd Live in Pompeii (yeah, Roger Waters is a flaming AssHat but I still like the music)
and will top the New Year off with some Hatsune Miku Live.

Just Like (Starting Over)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZCxyOcvp5A

Our life together
Is so precious together
We have grown, we have grown
Although our love is still special
Let’s take a chance and fly away
Somewhere alone
It’s been too long since we took the time
No-one’s to blame, I know time flies so quickly
But when I see you darling
It’s like we both are falling in love again
It’ll be just like starting over
Starting over
Everyday we used to make it love
Why can’t we be making love nice and easy
It’s time to spread our wings and fly
Don’t let another day go by my love
It’ll be just like starting over
Starting over
Why don’t we take off alone
Take a trip somewhere far, far away
We’ll be together all alone again
Like we used to in the early days
Well, well, well darling
It’s been too long since we took the time
No-one’s to blame, I know time flies so quickly
But when I see you darling
It’s like we both are falling in love again
It’ll be just like starting over
Starting over
Our life together
Is so precious together
We have grown, we have grown
Although our love still is special
Let’s take a chance and fly away somewhere
Starting over (over and over and over)

My favorite version of "The King of Love My Shepherd Is" is set to a tune by Harry Rowe Shelley and is often used as an anthem by church choirs. The refrain seems to have been borrowed for "Mid Storied Lands," the University of Southern California's alma mater from 1909 to 1924. This is not the version used at Princess Di's funeral.

In 2000, my father, who had served for many years as the music director at the East Whittier Methodist Church in Whittier, Calif. performed this hymn as part of a duet with a soprano, backed by the full choir, and I made a film of it. I While filming it, I had to resist the temptation to sing along with the USC lyrics. I play the recording from time to time. My father passed away in 2001.

You can see the choir of the Polk Street Methodist Church in Amarillo, Texas sing the exact same arrangment by clicking here.

They cut off the last line. It’s;

Dr. Cox: “I’m sure you do.”

The vocals in that were wonderful. I never could sing alto, could not get the notes right in contrast to the melody. Sorry about your father, nice to have a musical family. Mine is now, not me so much. I lost my father in 1982. So much has happened since he died; I miss him so much.

The version sung at Diana's funeral was Dykes/baker. Dominus Regit Me. Glad it was in English.

I went to Pentecostal church for awhile, too, picked up some music there. Their pianist I took lessons from. She learned to play by the chord method and was wonderful. You have to feel it from inside, and I didn't have the feel for it. I learned the old-fashioned way, sheet music and never got real good at it, did play some really hard songs fairly well when I practiced more.

My only connection with God through Jesus now is through prayer and music. I love a lot of Catholic music, too.
