9-year-old scares off man from stealing his dad's truck

KOKOMO, Ind. (WTHR) - A 9-year-old boy in Kokomo scared a would-be robber away from stealing his dad's truck.

But then that man ended up taking another car and leading them on a high-speed chase before crashing and being arrested.

All of this started at the One Stop Express on the corner of Washington and Jefferson in Kokomo, then ended at the American Tool Rental on South Lafountain Street.

Kevin Cooksey and Kyle Sparling stopped by the One Stop as strangers for different reason, Cooksey needed ibuprofen for his wife and Sparling wanted Doritos. They didn't know they'd end up leaving together and chasing after someone they say tried to steal both their cars.

“When I saw my truck door open, I was like, ‘oh my God, what am I going to tell my wife?’” said Cooksey.

That's because Cooksey's 9 year old son, Larry Larimore, was inside - with the engine running.

“I was thinking, I hope my son knew what to do in that situation,” said Cooksey.

“As soon as he opened the door, I got scared,” said Larimore. “So I pulled out the pellet gun and pointed it to his head.”

That scared the man enough to get him out of the truck, but then he ran into the next car down - Sparling's black Trail Blazer, which also had its engine running.

“I didn't know what to think, I just kind of ran outside and watched him,” said Sparling.

“I wanted to go catch the guy,” said Cooksey. “It's just one of those instincts to help out somebody else.”

Cooksey told Sparling to get in the truck with them. They called the police and chased the suspect down Washington Street.

“Right up here by this church, he got up on the sidewalk over here and got back on the road,” said Cooksey. “At this point, we were doing about 70 miles per hour.”

“It was doing donuts, zig zags, almost flipped,” said Larimore.

“I was just glad he didn't wreck into anybody,” said Sparling. “That was my biggest fear, I think.”

“I thought he was going to come back at me,” said Cooksey. “I thought I was going to have to dodge a moving car with my 9 year old son in the truck.”

After a couple miles, the suspect crashed Sparling’s car. Larimore says he's glad he and his dad were able to help track the suspect down.

Great story. Perp might have been smarter than some think. CO2 pelletgun is truly lethal in right hands.

CO2! Yeah, that's the ticket. Got me this nitro-piston and it's great except for the upper body strength needed to load:)

Squirrel gun? Also great for rats and snakes.

I killed 3 large rattlers in our implement shed last year with a 177 caliber pump up Daisy air rifle (used BBs). (did not damage the building, by choosing the shot.)

I don’t get this “leave the car running” stuff when parking in front of a Convenience Store.

In Dirty Harry, he stopped the Bank Robbery because the guy in the Getaway Car left it running and Harry took notice.

Are all these people afraid their Slurpees will melt before they get back in their Cars and have to start them?

Anywhere I go, I shut the Car off and lock it.

The Gun didn’t scare the guy, the Kid’s icy stare did along with the Hoodie.

What parent, in their right mind, leaves a kid in a car w/ the engine running? Or leaves a kid in a car, unsupervised. Period.

“leave the car running” means I’m robbing the place or We’re about to run out of gas. Either way it’s poor planning.

Luckily I grew up on the streets of Philadelphia and my parents didn’t own a car.

When I was a kid, I got in my Uncle Art’s Comet and put it in Neutral and coasted down the driveway and through the back wall of the garage.

Earned me the nickname “Crash” from my Dad.

Before that, he called me “Sparky” because I stuck the car keys into the electrical outlet.

Naw, have to leave it running with the Air Conditioning on full blast so the Slurpee and the Ice in the Big Gulp won’t melt.

Leaving a two ton vehicle running and unlocked, what could go wrong? Especially with your young Kids inside.

No wonder a lot of these Convenience Stores have those vehicle barrier Poles in front.

My Car cost me 30K. I don’t leave it running and unattended, just like I don’t leave my iPhone and Wallet unattended.

The only time I ever left one running was my Ford Explorer which I could lock and unlock with the code panel on the door. It was a five-digit code from 1-10. (5 buttons that went left or right to pick the number.

I ALWAYS carry spare keys. If I need or want to leave a car running, I ALWAYS lock it. At least slow them down. Many crimes could be stopped if people would simply lock their cars or their houses. Yes, there are the types that smash windows. When they rob cars around here (about 30 miles away) they just walk up and open the doors of cars unlocked in the driveway, at night. Makes me SMH.

People with security cameras that leave their cars unlocked in the driveway; especially overnight. I don’t get it.

Wow that’s the actual kid. Awesome.

He’d have made a better President than Obama. Then again, anybody working at he convenience store would have, too.

I always park where my only car is protected on at least 3 sides - especially at walmart .
