My thought as well.
The protestors have tied the bad economic times to Islamic rule. This is a problem for the Mullahs as they have no way to improve life in Iran. Their rules won’t permit that.
Iranians remember living good lives in reasonable freedom compared to today. They see the dead end of Islam and they want out.

I think Trump is trying to find “common ground” with those who have a very vicious attitude towards Iran like they do towards Assad in Syria.
The kind of people that got Trump to shoot missiles at Syria earlier this year over a “chemical weapons attack”.
I am concerned that zealots are pushing the situation in Iran to get President Trump to go against Iran.
