Was he a muslim? If so, then it could be argued that he DOES have ties to at least one terror group. Especially since all the major organized Islamist terror groups encourage "lone wolf" terrorist attacks.

One must die in the jihad to guarantee the heaven of Islam. To die while killing infidels (non believers or false believers (those not like the jihadist)) is both honorable and desirable.
