(The clerk and three customers reportedly took cover when Derringer came in waving the gun then soon chased him from the store.)
An Ohio man by the name of Derringer cobbled together a gun made from household items and furniture legs in an attempt to knock over a Circle K on Christmas.
Police in Akron took Jeffrey Derringer, 48, into custody on Monday after customers and staff at the convenience store chased the man into an empty parking lot and detained him, the Akron Beacon-Journal reported.
The gun-like piece of industrial art that Derringer used in his failed stick-up attempt? A makeshift rifle fashioned out of a pipe, a fake scope, a spring and two table legs clamped together as the stock.
According to local media, the man was charged with aggravated robbery and booked into the Summit County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in Akron Municipal Court later this week.
Why didn’t he make a fake Derringer?
THe guy was probably looking for the happy medium that would get him three meals a day and a nice warm place to sleep without risking serious jail time.
Don’t scoff.
That thing can launch a rubber band with a paper clip attached to it at speeds up to 45 fps...
I’m surprised he didn’t get shot..................
It appears to be nicely made but it doesn’t look much like a gun. Why didn’t he just make a zip gun?
My Brother belonged to a gang when he was 10. They were not really bad kids but several of them had made zip guns which would fire a .22.
I dunno, that gun looks a little scary to me.
I think his best defense is to say it was an obvious joke and use the fake gun as exhibit one. :)
Considering how cold it is outside right now, I’d say you nailed it.
Plus some free medical and dental care while he’s at it to boot.
Then in the spring, it’s back out on the street.
Maybe he could get a job working as a props guy for Lucas Films
He should have painted his fake rifle black.
Black rifles are always more dangerous and scary.
.
A zip gun fasghioned out of a length of 1/4 pipe, a spring, and a ball bearing would have been lethal, and probably easier to make!
.
For 15 bucks he could have gotten a plastic BB gun and just snapped off the orange tip for a much more convincing gun.
He got his Christmas wish of a warm bed and three squares for the holidays.
It might be one of those fully automatic assault table legs...
.
He didn’t have any “tactical” black paint?

And being ‘slightly’ sub-sonic, it could have been silenced too!
