Bono has said that music “has gotten very girly” in recent years, with hip-hop serving as “the only place for young male anger at the moment”.

The U2 frontman voiced the opinion during a new interview, with the 57-year-old lamenting the lack of “young male anger” in rock music in 2017.

You are correct. While I like the album, Joshua Tree did not have the raw energy/anger of U2’s early days.

1958 — perhaps the greatest year for rock and roll:

“a DJ said he genuflected before it. Silly bo... oh, wait. I did, too. LOL”

Anybody want to translate?

Bono Thinks Music “Has Gotten Very Girly”

I really don't have a problem with that.

So Maybelline, Memphis Tennesse, and Nadine were about winning? Who’da thunk it?

Maybe he should change careers and go in to the Non Profit Charitable Organization business, where he can Expense 98% of the Contributions made and Pocket the rest.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1314543/Bonos-ONE-foundation-giving-tiny-percentage-funds-charity.html

The non-profit organisation set up by the U2 frontman received almost £9.6million in donations in 2008 but handed out only £118,000 to good causes (1.2 per cent).

Maybelline is obviously about winning:

A Cadillac a-rollin’ on the open road,
Nothin’ will outrun my V8 Ford....

The Cadillac lookin’ like it’s sittin’ still
And I caught Maybellene at the top of the hill.

Same with Memphis:

She could not leave her number, but I know who placed the call
‘Cause my uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall

A movie that really captured the times is American Graffiti.

I’ve heard that said about American Graffiti. That was before my time, so I’d have no way to know.

Winning?

Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
You’ve started back doing the things you used to do.…

There is no rock band of consequence right now

Sad to say, rock and roll is pretty much dead. I'd love to be proven wrong and I keep looking for proof that I am, but most of the rock bands making music on tour are the same ones doing so when I was a kid in the '70s. After they're gone there's absolutely no one to take their place.

Even hip-hop has gotten stale and seems past it's prime.

Heck yeah -— winning. Not life is perfect. Heroes face obstacles. But they prevail! In Maybelline, he prevails. He catches her.

Submitted for review and critique by you and the extended thread:

When Bono was referencing the “girly” music prevalent today and lamenting the loss of anger in rock, he must have been talking about the poofters in the British Isles. And even then he’s forgotten about Judas Priest and others.

He’s missed a call from his young
daughter and can’t get back in touch with her.

That’s winning?

Nile Rodgers is another example. He is still a sought after guitarist and producer. His contribution to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” is, IMO, what makes that song great. He is a legend.

Yes. He helped make Bowie's "Let's Dance" possible, and that was one of the best albums of the '80s for me.

Early rock and roll was the ‘white-ification’ of rhythm and blues. Having the blues is not ‘winning.’

Oh come on Paul, hip hop is ghetto garbage. Don't compare it to Rock and Roll.

This is Rock and Roll:
