Bono has said that music “has gotten very girly” in recent years, with hip-hop serving as “the only place for young male anger at the moment”.
The U2 frontman voiced the opinion during a new interview, with the 57-year-old lamenting the lack of “young male anger” in rock music in 2017.
Most if not all Motown and Disco singers and musicians could really sing, play and write music. They were genuinely musically talented or at least skilled. Many these days are not. They can’t play instruments, they can’t compose music and they can’t really sing without vocal aids.
So what’s the “future”?
(U2 was never expository of anything exceptional on the guitar, BTW.)
U2’s really early stuff was basically a ripoff of Joy Division. Atonal, untalented, depressing “post-punk” non-music.
I will also say this to Bono. Don’t listen for music trends by paying attention to what your children are listening to.
Rich, spoiled kids tend not to have their pulse on any real “rage” music.
‘Rock and Roll’, the very name means sex.
Almost every early rock and roll song is a musical interpretation of sex.
It wasn’t born of anger, idiot Bono. It was born of sexual desire.
“Bad” is in my top10 all time favorite songs. I’m not ready to give up on U2 yet..

I think the Edge was exceptional. I mean, he’s no Bill Frisell, but he makes me think of Bill Frisell, because he’s unique and fresh and avoids all the cliches.
As for what’s next, hip hop has dominated for 20 years now. How much longer will it last? I don’t have a crystal ball. I have no idea what will be next.
I’m not a huge U2 fan, but “One” is one of my all-time favorite songs.
The only way hip hop is surviving is via crossover songs—with no shortage of guitar music. Prime example is the current #1 song.
