Very perceptive.
Let’s see, had it been on Obama’s watch:
“Tree adored by president succumbs to time and nature despite his hurculain efforts to save it.”
Did I do OK?
I’ve always hated that tree. Thank God we finally have a President with the gumption to do what has to be done!
"The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The next best time is today."
It's the back lawn...
I remember the magnolias in front of Homewood House in Baltimore.
They were sheltered from northern winds.
The leaves are a problem since they are quite durable.
Make sure the leaf problem is acceptable before planting one.
I think southern magnolias, like cherry trees, block growth of grass and other plants underneath them.
The best Saucer magnolia I ever saw was in the Stockade area of Schenectady, NY. I saw some good examples in the Boston area as well.
In Baltimore, the cold usually marred the flowering display of the Saucer magnolias. Further north, the trees bloom later and are not as impacted.
The first media reports are ALREADY blaming Melania for chopping down the tree, as if she wanted it cut down because it interfered with with her view.
...
According to the article it was her decision. But it’s also clear something had to be done, and it had nothing to do with the view. It sounds like one of the three trunks will be left standing for a few more years. If I understand correctly they have rooted cuttings, so technically it will still be the same tree when they are planted.
Trees dont live forever, the arborist said it was time for this one, and they have to take it out before it falls on the WH. I manage an historic site and this, unfortunately, something that you have to do from time to time.
Yup, something like that.
Or...
“Decaying Iconic White House Tree to be Replaced with Descendant”
“Risking Collapse, Iconic WH Tree Being Restored”
“Remains of Iconic WH Tree to be Reborn As Oval Office Furniture”
...something indicating it’s the tree’s “fault”, not the WH occupant’s.
Trees have term limits. So should Congress.
Melania Trump orders removal of near-200-year-old tree from White House
[artisan fix it up with sanding and varnishing work so you can count the rings, neat.]
Excellent idea.
Now I’m going to call my 89 year old carpenter father an “artisan”. (grin)
Actually Melania with the headline from Newsweak:
Melania Trump orders removal of near-200-year-old tree from White House
But the Jackson magnolia will live on. White House groundskeepers have been
preparing for the tree’s demise and have grown several offshoots from the
tree and will plant one of them in its place.

The tree was planted by Andrew Jackson, or at his behest. It is a racist tree and should have been removed long ago.
Unnamed sources have stated they heard Trump saying “That tree stands between me and White Supremacy. Cut it down”
My daughter had two old, rotting maples cut down in front of her house last summer. A local woodworker took them away for her.
I was able to contact him, and buy a beautiful, live edged bowl that he had made out of part of one.
I gave it to her for Christmas yesterday. She was so thrilled by it.
When is the tree called racist?
Trees Communicating...
There’s a punchline in THAT!
So one of the nearby trees it has been communicating with is located on the grounds of the Washington Post. The source of the leaks has been found and will be dealt with appropriately.
