FULL TITLE: Disney's iconic animator Bob Givens - who drew much-loved characters including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tom & Jerry and Popeye - dies aged 99

The animator who helped design Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd has died. Bob Givens was 99 years old.

Daughter Mariana Givens says her father died December 14 in Burbank, California from acute respiratory failure.

Bob Givens started working for Walt Disney Studios right out of high school in 1937.

During his time with Disney, Givens would work on designs for both Donald Duck and Snow White.

Three years later, he joined what would become Warner Bros. His version of Bugs Bunny debuted that same year, in 1940.

From the days when cartoons had some quality and movement.

Modern day stuff seems to be cheapened with static figures with a twitching mouth and minimal motion. A lot cheaper than the old way of drawing every frame.

At one point there was supposed to be a movie about Termite Terrace in the works (I seem to recall Joe Dante’s name attached to it).

I don’t think Hollywood of today is interested in it. Does it have computer animated characters running around? Explosions? Social justice?

Social Justice, no! Explosions, god I hope so!

About the most action I could think of was Tex Avery losing an eye to a paperclip launched via rubber band.

Look at Hanna-Barbara figures post 1980 (see 1985 Jetsons for examples), all facial expressions are anger or stupification (eyebrows both down or eyebrows both up). That's the extent of the facial characteristics in their animated actors for many decades now.

He was kind of an independent animator. He went to work for Disney in 1937 and was contributing to Donald Duck and Snow White. His version of Bugs Bunny debuted in 1940 for Warner Brothers. Other characters he illustrated over his six-decade career included Tom & Jerry, Daffy Duck, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Popeye. Most of these were owned by different studios.

He also worked as a storyboard artist on the TV show Linus! The Lion Hearted and then as a graphic designer on the series Baggy Pants & the Nitwits.

He was very versatile and talented.

Exactly. Having "somewhat" grown up with the original quality cartoons, the cheapened production was such an insult.

Of course, the dumbing down of kids was already well underway, so they have no idea.

Just imagine the current "animators" trying to do a modern version of the Roadrunner to equal the original.

He worked for Warner bros, read the article. He did early versions of Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd before Chuck Jones took over. That is why Bugs and Elmer look different over time.
