Koch heir sues ex-fiancée to get giant ring back

Wyatt Koch — the son of billionaire Bill Koch — is suing his ex-fiancée to get back an 8.24-carat ring after she broke off their engagement, according to court documents. Wyatt’s lawyers claim that he purchased the pricey Oscar Heyman cushion-cut diamond with two tapered baguette diamonds for $180,000 in March for a Tallahassee lassie named Ivie Gabrielle Slocumb.

But come May — after she allegedly “broke off” the engagement — Slocumb kept the rock. Wyatt’s lawyers say the ring’s now worth $250,000, and Wyatt also wants $15,000 in damages.

According to court documents filed in Florida circuit court, Wyatt — known in Palm Beach as the flame-haired, flamboyantly attired CEO of his own Palm Beach fashion line, Wyatt Ingraham — has “demanded the return of the ring . . . on multiple occasions” and says that the would-be bride “received the ring as a conditional gift. She refuses to return it despite proper demand and the condition not being fulfilled.”

I don’t know about the law if she calls it off, but I know I PA anyway, if the guy calls it off the woman gets to keep the ring.

An engagement ring is a gift, not compensation in a contract. Accepting a gift does not constitute a contract.

This is actually a common case presented in the first contract Law, or Business course. It has been ruled on, and is well established in case law.

A contract requires both parties to agree to a contract, that there be substantial compensation, and that it be for a lawful purpose.

Marrying for money is not technically a lawful purpose (prostitution).

Since this guy is loaded, his lawyers will pursue whatever (within reason) he wants them to pursue. The lawyers could certainly badger and harass his ex for him, but he really has no right to insist on the return of the ring.

Headlines like this make me realize how stupid some “journalists” are. At this point, he is not an heir; he is an heir apparent until his dad dies.

Sheesh.

Dude.

You just graduated from the University of What Women Are. The ring was your tuition.

And you got off cheap.

>> If she breaks off the engagement she must give the ring back. If he does she gets to keep it.

>> That used to be contract law

I guess some people called it contract law.

But cynical folks could have called it “virginity insurance” for the lass who might get dumped by a faithless financé.

A valid cause of action doesn’t necessarily require status under contract law. “Breach of promise to marry” has sometimes been recognized as a common law tort, contract law notwithstanding. I believe this tort has now been eliminated by legislation in most places. But it may still survive in other jurisdictions.

Wyatt is the son of the “forgotten” Koch brother ... Bill Koch.

He may need the ring back for the money. Dad’s “only” worth $1.6 billion. (Compared with each of his uncles worth about $48 billion each)
