In the comments below the story someone asks “Exactly what is “open murder”?”

and the answer he got is “She didn’t shut the front door completely?”

Yep. That about sums up the brilliance of the term.

In Nevada, the prosecutors usually charge the crime of open murder. Open murder includes the crime of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and the lesser-included crimes of voluntary and involuntary manslaughter.

The term open murder (as far as I can find out at any rate):

A prosecutor may charge "Open Murder", which is a combination of First and Second Degree Murder, and the jury may determine the appropriate degree based on the proofs.
