The royal, who married the Queen's first cousin, attended a Christmas banquet at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday wearing a blackamoor brooch. Prince Harry's fiancée, Meghan Markle, who is mixed-race, was also a guest at the lunch. A spokesman said the princess "is very sorry and distressed that it has caused offence". Blackamoor figures and sculptures are exotic figures which usually depict African men and were prominent in the 17th and 18th centuries.

It is a part of “Americana” that can not be avoided when taking in the entirely of American Culture and Folk Art. Different people collect different things. I have a collection of wall crosses from all over the world. One of them is ebony from someplace in Africa. Some might look at the figure on the Cross and find it offensive, since the artist obviously portrayed a figure that looked like himself. The wood is black, the artist was African, so the Jesus looks like a stylized Black Man. It is neither racist, nor is it anti-christian, even though it is historically inaccurate.
The cross from Romania actually has a hand-grip on it...to repel vampires? Some Romanian might say that it is culturally insensitive!
LOL. The cooky jar, not the relative. She can’t cook worth a damn so she is rarely in a kitchen.( there goes that stereotype too!)
Too bad everything is offensive to someone.... My New Years resolve is to ignore the myriads of morons who have such a slight insight to history, culture and tradition that everything they see is an offense. I am officially offended at them. Same thing for folks who tailgate.
I thought diversity was a good thing? Guess I was wrong or else I simply do not understand diversity.
If it was me, I’d have asked the woman if she is mixed race, too?
I doubt Markles is worried about the brooch, she’s ‘merican.
There you go! Scandanavian/white Santa ‘ offends’ many, but it’s accurate. Forget those hula girl dolls on dashboards, Mexican themed parties with sombreros and piñatas-offensive! Everywhere you go there will be SOMETHING that offends you-visually or aurally. The only sure way to avoid that is to blind and deafen yourself.
Since the 60’s, we have been bombarded by the cultural trappings of other countries and ethnicities.
Mexican Blankets, Hindu Yoga Programs, Hawaiian Shirts, Japanese Sushi Bars, Karaoke, Buddhist Spirituality, Cinco de Mayo, Eastern European Embroidered Blouses, Chinese ballet Troupes, Italian Mafia Movies, Tandouri Chicken, Shish Kebab and Humus, Belly Dance lessons, Pan-Asian Cuisine, Oktoberfest parties, Transcendental Meditation, Gangsta Rap, low-hanging baggy pants, dreamcatchers, and the ever-present “palestinian” headdress worn as a neck scarf.
We have been forced to accept “diversity” instead of the original concept of the “American melting Pot”.
Then, after white people have become somewhat comfortable with these invasive cultural trappings, they are accused of “Cultural Appropriation”.
In other words, you can’t win with these people, so you might as well do whatever you please.
Very Good Point Indeed!
Thanks, FRiend!
Just had some Ramen Noodles and miso soup.
Which I ate with chopsticks.
Was that wrong? :-)
LOL!
To be honest, if it was a pin of a white person in finery it would have been taken as a symbol of white supremacy.
“I’m sorry I’m wearing a confederate uniform. Really, I’m upset about it too. You see, just couldn’t figure out how to wear TWO confederate uniforms at once!”
Now THAT would have been a feat!
