Facebook ditches fake news flag after admitting it was making the problem worse

acebook is getting rid of its fake news red flags because they were making fabricated media reports appear more believable to its users.

The social network began showing "disputed" warnings next to articles in December to alert people that third party fact-checking websites deemed them misleading.

It will now show a selection of “related articles” next to offending stories instead. These will give more context and could help people learn the facts surrounding a situation through reputable media publications.

The U-turn was prompted by research suggesting users would actually believe fake news even if it was flagged as incorrect or a misleading.

"Academic research on correcting misinformation has shown that putting a strong image, like a red flag, next to an article may actually entrench deeply held beliefs – the opposite effect to what we intended," Facebook product manager Tessa Lyons wrote in a blog-post.

It conducted research which suggested that false news stories with "related articles" next to it were shared fewer times than those highlighted with a red flag.

Many otherwise intelligent people are afraid of Facebook.
It forces people to post private info somehow.
Aliens probably.

Define "reputable media publications."

That's quite the fancy spin you came up there, Tess!

Non-academic common sense says that people saw the red flags and knew that those were articles with truth in them that Fakebook commie management wanted to steer the sheeple away from.

If Facebook wants to raise the quality of news they could just require news agencies tag any story that uses anonymous sources as unsourced news and any news with verifiable news as sourced news.

How utterly queer, none of the MSM articles that I appropriately flagged as FAKE NEWS (Trump banning words at the CDC, ABC’s jumping-the-gun, Trump this, Trump that) that were subsequently confirmed EVER had that “red flag” adjacent to them nor were the original posts (shared by acquaintances) pulled, corrected, noted, or modified.

PS all of those anti-Trump, anti-Republican Bullstalin stories were pimped by Fakebook in their trending (smears) section.

How about a demerit system for WashPoo, HuffPoo, NothingbutPureRubbish, MSLSD, AlwaysBroadcastingCrap, SeeBS, NYetTimes, LAtteTimes, et al each time they spread horsesh!t?

Bonus marks anytime they tank the stock market because of a fake news shocker.

5 demerits in a year and you cease to be “credible”.

NOte how Fakebook assumes conservatives are “special needs” adults in need of extra supports and context to guide us to the “right thoughts”?
