FREECELL/Vanity

Posted on 12/20/2017 12:22:51 PM PST by Allen In Texas Hill Country

OK, I've put this vanity post off for a month or more. Its a bit lame but when I find I enjoy something a bit I like to post what I found.

So here goes,,,,, when I'm at the computer and not on FR I do solitaire. Yeah I did say lame but I put my time in. I did SOAP II, Autocoder, GMAP, COBOL, Burroughs medium systems assembler, several variations of SDL and finally C++. But to get back....

Specifically I find Freecell very entertaining. Statistically one can win 9 out of 10 games. Maybe half of those won might be considered not too much of a challenge. On the hand, no she didn't wear a glove. The other wins require patience and a bit of this and that. Those wins don't come easy and require thought. More than once I walk away and come back in a couple of hours and try something else and bingo, puzzle solved. Thats why I find it relaxing/enjoyable. Well relaxing after the win. Thats 9 out of 10.

FREECELL......

I thought it was theoretically possible to win ALL freecell games.

Spider is much more challenging and interesting. Four suits, of course. I win about 10% of the time.

20 years ago when there was a Yahoo chat, ( and it was a real zoo, ) I used to go into a room and ask for the cheat for MS Solitaire. That always made for wonderful conversation! People would call me all kinds of stupid and I would be laughing my fool head off! ROFL

100% can be won. Use Control/Z to undo a move or many moves, right back to the start of an individual game.

I am closing in on 4000 consecutive wins over three devices.

That said, I have been working on one on my tablet for over three months.

Freecell is my favorite because every game is winnable. So far I’ve won every one - eventually.

I use two suits and my win percentage is 25%

My statistics: 3621 won, 425 lost. That’s 89%.

I moved and finagled XP Freecell and some other XP games to play on Win7.

I think every game on XP Freecell is winnable. It just takes time and patience.

XP Spider Solitaire not so much. I win about 3/4 of the middle level games. Occasionally, I get one that seems impossible. Occasionally, I will play one over and over for a week to find get to a win.

My favorite as well. I’ve never lost a solvable game and there is at least one.

OTOH I spent 75 minutes solving Freecell 454 and the Freecell app didn’t record the win. I tried it again for 30 minutes or so and had to go to YouTube to finally solve it.

Great game. But don’t start with 454.

I used to freak people out with minesweeper.

There was a hack that allowed you to know what was under every single square. When it was turned on, as you hovered over a square, if there was a mine there, a single pixel at the corner of your computer screen would turn white.

I went into an egghead computer store once and drove the staff crazy. I did it in “difficult” mode. I’d clear out the entire board and win without flagging any squares. I finally told them what I did.

Supposedly there are some unsolvables at least in the MS version:

Wikipedia:

The original Microsoft FreeCell package includes 32,000 games, generated by a 15-bit, pseudorandom-number seed. These games are known as the “Microsoft 32,000”.[3] All but one of these hands have been completed.[5] Later versions of FreeCell include more than one million hands.[3] When Microsoft FreeCell became very popular during the 1990s, the Internet FreeCell Project attempted to solve all the deals by crowdsourcing consecutive games to specific people. The project ran from August 1994 to April 1995, and only one game proved unwinnable.[7] Out of the current Microsoft Windows games, eight are unsolvable.[

I play FreeCell too.

But just a little...

Just finished Game 41,959.

I've won 36,678 of them for an 87% win percentage.

Not bad, eh?

I can't remember free cell and don't particularly want to because I was moderately addicted to those card games and haven't played any for a long time.

I never thought I could win 4-suit Spider Solitaire, and had 49 games in my wins before I switched to another computer. And I'm sure others have done much better than I.

100% can be won. Use Control/Z to undo a move or many moves, right back to the start of an individual game.

From freecell.org:

Nearly every FreeCell game can be won. Only a very few FreeCell games are unwinnable. Using the basic deal numbering system that virtually all FreeCell games use, game #11982 is the first unwinnable game of FreeCell. After that only the games #146692, #186216, #455889, #495505, #512118, #517776, and #781948 are unsolvable out of the first million games. Therefore, unsolvable games of FreeCell are literally eight out of a million.

I’ve played 21,000 hands of Solitaire on this computer, but it won’t let you win more than 85%. I haven’t played Freecell in some time, but I’m gonna go try a hand.
