Got a Bakersfield Catalog today. Hope all is going well for you. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
Planted gourds and garlic.. we planted two fruit trees about two months ago. Its very dry, 43 days with no rain, ground frozen but warms up to mid-40s. So Im freezing water in plastic containers and putting large ice cubes around the trees to water them.
Pinging the list. Posting link to article about front yard gardening.

We are lucky that we picked the right side of the street. Our backyard has a southwest orientation. The houses on the other side have Northeast - not much sun for gardeners.
We also do not have a Housing Authority - just some basic rules that were in the original contract. Only one exterior unattached storage building. Dogs must be penned up or on a leash. No obnoxious animals such as pigs.
So far, people are ignoring the first two, but no one has dabbled with pigs yet. So a Front yard garden should be ok.
It’s pretty dry here too, but we aren’t watering anything. Summer is the only time we do that. Once we have freezing temps we don’t water again till spring.
I just harvested some garlic from an old home place that’s been on my property well over 100 years. I’m not sure what it’s called. I eaten it before, it’s a little sweet, not quite as strong as the garlic I buy at the store but it has a little heat on the end. It doesn’t make into a big head and divide into cloves but it does divide and multiply. I cut up a little to eat today and had some peanut butter and crackers a little later, I was surprised these two tastes went well together.
I could see roasted garlic working with peanut butter and crackers since it gets a little sweet when roasted, but not raw or sautéed.
That’s an interesting combo. I am surprised too.
No gardening going in here in west Michigan. We have over 8" of snow on the ground. I do have a beautiful pinkish amaryllis in bloom inside with 5 flowers. And a white phaleanopsis orchid that grew 2 stalks of blooms, well over 30 flowers. I my start up some alfalfa sprouts to get some more greens in my diet. Early Merry Christmas wishes to all my gardening friends.
Planted gourds and garlic..
Hi greeneyes!
(((HUGS)))
It’s so cold today.
And then my furnace failed.
Waited three hours in the cold , boiling water to pour down the drains to keep them from freezing, only to find out it was a “kill switch” that was somehow tripped in a broom closet.
I am warm now but still PO’ed.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Garlic is the only crop growing in our garden on Humboldt bay. The weather has been clear and cool for several days which is unusual as we normally have near constant rain. Lady Bender and I have done several hours of Christmas shopping for family including our one year old Great Grand Daughter...
Oh praise the Lord it wasn’t really a failure that could take days to fix. We used to use our oven for heat when the furnace was out. Now we are all electric though, but have 2 fireplaces and 2 kerosene heaters.
Used to have a wood stove, thinking about getting another one and an insert for one of the fireplaces.
Garlic is all I have outdoors too. Wheat and rye haven’t shown any sprouting - got it in pretty late.
You have my sympathy. I wouldn’t mind if Missouri warmed up to a zone 7. LOL
Before the ground froze I pulled some garlic bulbs broke them up into cloves and tossed them into a plastic bag. They sprouted. I’m going to plant them in some small pots until Spring.
How do you get orchids to flower again? I never have any luck.
Look at Lopi stoves and inserts.
It’s the best made brand.
The easiest one to get to rebloom is the phaleanopsis. It’s also the easiest to grow in northern climates which is why there are so many of them in the shops. If it is already in bloom, when the flowers fall cut the flower stem back by 2/3 just above one of the joints. After that it’s all about light, and moisture and that the roots do not rot. I never fertilize.
