I read somewhere that the Stump who is running for Franks’s seat is not related to the former congressman. The frontrunner in that race, were she to get in, is state Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Yee, but she hasn’t decided one way or another.
My favorite among those who already are running in the AZ-08 race is state Senator Steve Montenegro. Prior to his state Senate service, he served as state House Majority Leader, so his record is extensive. Montenegro appears to be a conservative’s conservative on every issue, and has the record to prove that he not only talks the talk, but also walks the walk: https://stevemontenegro.com In particular, check out his issue positions on immigration; having a Hispanic Republican congressman from Arizona going on both English- and Spanish-language media supporting the construction of a physical border wall with Mexico and opposing amnesty for illegal aliens would make liberals’ heads explode.
The AZ-08 is safely conservative Republican, so we don’t have to worry about nominating someone who is too conservative for the district. Steve Montenegro would be a fine successor to the great Trent Franks, and could be a good U.S. Senate or gubernatorial candidate after a few years in the U.S. House.
Your post is what the ideal thread contribution looks like, LOL.
You have really given us some good insight why he is a top candidate to consider.
I do want to bring up again the odd circumstance of this election timing really giving an unfortunate impact to the “Resign to Run” law in Arizona that says if you are not in the last year of an office in or representing Arizona, you have to resign to run (take?) a new one.
A big field due to the Feb primary and April general, will knock out a number of good guys from good offices they might be depending on to feed a family.
Those running for the Senate are normally financially somewhat past this issue but for 8th district it is a really concern.
Kimberly Yee has decided not to run for Congress, she is running for State Treasurer.
