High-tech shark-spotting drones are patrolling dozens of Australian beaches this summer to quickly identify underwater predators and deliver safety devices to swimmers and surfers faster than traditional lifesavers.
As hundreds of people lined up in the early morning sun to take part in a recent ocean swimming race at Bilgola Beach north of Sydney, they did so in the knowledge the ocean had been scanned to keep them safe.
I think it is really awesome, 20-year-old competitor Ali Smith said. It is cool to see technology and ocean swimming getting together, and hopefully more people will feel safer and get involved.

It’s a jungle down there. As in, in the water.

Sharks with lasers to take out the drones. Now that’s technology and ocean swimming getting together!
Omg, you made the coffee come out my nose!!! You owe me a new iPhone (oh remember the cheaper days when we just had to give each other new keyboards!?) I want to see the drones taking out the sharks with lasers!!
They should use some of these drones to deploy decoys, such as fake inflatable seals and sea otters. They can use these decoys to draw the sharks away from any potential victims.
We need this technology at our southern wall once it is built.
LOL, when the drone dropped something to the swimmers, my first thought was “Great...what good is toilet paper going to do me out here?”
I think I have an iphone 1 to give you, lol.
Yeah even laptops seem to be less on the cutting edge. I heard the price of an Iphone X is about a thousand now.
LOL at your TP comment. Wouldn’t a bangstick be of more use?
Heh, heck, drop them a waterproof copy of “How to Repel Shark Attack”!
Heh, thing drops it off and flies away!
Very funny! :D , You are on a roll.
That drone would have to fly away. cuz sharks can fly too.
Holy crap. That is a lot of powerful cartilage, shark muscle, and teeth.
Full of C4 and a remote detonator
