And some pay good money to be branded!
Perhaps a lucrative sideline for the Doc?
Most UK Docs are not big bucks.

Part of me wants to say ‘so what, where’s the harm?’ What artist doesn’t want to sign his work?

Sounds like the potential for a budding new industry - we got tats on the outside, so gear up for tats on the inside.

How does one precisely determine that their kidneys / liver / pancreas / appendix / intestines have had initials put on them, anyway?

Kinda like when you have work done on a classic car. A mechanical will put his mark on a weld or bolt.
So if anyone else monkeyed around with it, he’ll instantly know

This is beyond satire since no one could dream this up if they tried.

I have kin that was a brand new Navy Doc, WWII.
He was the ships Doctor when a sailor was injured.
While they are getting everything ready he is looking at his books! Being an ophthalmologist, this was not what he was trained in.
At a ship reunion a few years back, the sailor told him everything healed just fine.
The ‘marbles’ always remind me of that event.

What's the problem? QA requires you to sign off on everything.

How do you even find out you have someone’s initials on your liver?

My stepfather was a litigator, with more than a few medical malpractice cases under his belt.
When you get info like this, it’s usually from a nurse or other operating room personnel who get fed up and rat out the doctor. I’d bet dollars to donuts, this wasn’t the first time the doctor did this.

From the sequel to "Mister Roberts". Ives took on the James Cagney role/character, and whomever did the Jack Lemmon role, did an appy on Ives, placing, in defiance of the radio MD's order, sterilized glass - marbles, in Ives.
At the end of the film, Ives is shown in a launch, gently probing a spot on his abdomen.

That is “Ensign Pulver” with Robert Walker Jr. as the title character.

Ask your team to look around a bit when doing esophagogastroduodenoscopy.
Better still when they do the both ends combo.

Don’t cross the streams!
Especially when using flammable or explosive anesthetics.
Very bad.

Likely post-operation scans to check for progress, proper healing, etc
Either that or he bragged about it or one of the others in the operating room spoke up.
