I don’t think I have a Go utility.

It’s my iMac from 2007 with 10.6.8

In the disk utility, do I click first aid or restore?

I’m pretty sure I don’t want to erase, partition, or RAID it

Everyone has a GO menu on the Desktop menu. . . but you have to be on the desktop to see it. Click on the Desktop icon on the dock or on the Desktop itself and a GO menu will appear at the top of the screen on the Menu bar.

When you are in the Disk Utility, just highlight the external drive and select MOUNT. That's all. Nothing more. When you do that, it will appear on the window sidebars, and if you've set your Finder preferences to show it, on the desktop.
