Dogs are smart.
Cats are sneaky smart.

Wow lots of ‘Dogs are smarter than cats’ posts in the last few days. You’d almost think cats were them thar stupid Trump voters, and dogs were woke.

Be careful, very careful. You’ve just ignited a quasi-religious war between canophiles and felophiles, a conflict almost as irreconcilable as the 30 Years War. Indeed a fanatical felophile might even try a Gunpowder Plot against you. Take care to secure and patrol all entrances to your basement.
YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.

Having owned both, cats never seemed all that bright to me. I can understand liking them better than dogs as animals or pets, but saying theyre more intelligent than dogs seems absurd.

And in other news: while dogs distracted their owners the cats killed them.
This study is a bit overblown. There are other categories of intelligence and there are likely alternative adaptations in different animals that increase intelligence. Biology is a messy analog system and you can’t say because one biological trait has an advantage that whatever species has it iare superior.

Intelligence is hard to define in humans...
Actually it's pretty easy to quantify by a number of criteria, but isn't flattering to certain population subgroups, so they make it sound all murky, nebulous, and ill-defined in humans.

Dogs and cats are different precisely because they are built for different lifestyles. Cats have a more developed visual cortex to hunt fast moving prey, dogs are "sociable" (as perceived by humans) and behave well in groups because they operate/hunt best in communal packs.

When I worked in a truck shop my boss had a boxer that was a shop dog. One friend of ours had a yellow lab and another friend had a Rottweiler. The lab and the rottie were both noticeably smarter than the boxer. One of the games we played with them was throwing a brake diaphragm (similar to a frisbee) and all three dogs would race to fetch it. If you just pretended to throw it the lab and rottie would be out there a hundred yards looking for it. The dumb boxer would still be beside you staring at you waiting for you to throw it.
Intelligence is subjective.
