Aurora 10-year-old takes her own life after suspected bullying incident caught on camera

AURORA, Colo. -- An Aurora couple are dealing with an unimaginable loss as they prepare to lay their 10-year-old daughter to rest.

“She was just a child of joy and she brought joy to everyone,” her father Anthony Davis said.

Ashawnty Davis was a fifth-grader at Sunrise Elementary School in Aurora. She had a passion for basketball and wanted to grow up to be a WNBA star.

But her parents say something changed in the happy little girl at the end of October when she was involved in a fight after school on Sunrise Elementary property.

“She got into her first ever fight. It was recorded by a student and sent to an app called Musical.ly,” Davis said.

In the video, Ashawnty and another girl are seen fighting, while a group of kids watched. According to Ashawnty’s mother, her daughter confronted the girl, who she claims had been bullying her.

“I saw my daughter was scared,” said Latoshia Harris, Ashawnty’s mother.

While the video is difficult to watch, her parents believe it’s important to see.

“She was devastated when she found out that it had made it to Musical.ly,” Davis said.

The parents say the bullying she endured after the video surfaced was too much for the 10-year-old to handle.

“My daughter came home two weeks later and hanged herself in the closet,” Harris said.

Ashawnty spent nearly two weeks at Children’s Hospital Colorado on life support before dying Wednesday morning.

Well, she is a 10 year old, so those coping mechanisms are probably not well developed.

And she is a 10 year old with access to too much information and too much knowledge in the information age/internet age we live in.

How else does a 10 year old come up with the knowledge of how to kill themselves?

I can’t imagine growing up in this age. When I was bullied, I got to go home and not see or interact with the bullies. So I got peace of mind for many hours a day. Now, it never stops.

So she had a fight...big f-ing deal. Teach her to carry some keys and bloody the girl badly next time. Then NO ONE will tease her again.

The problem is the social media, and the fact that the girl had access to a smart phone to obsess over Music.ly and discover how to hang herself.

In many ways the traditional brick and mortar K-12 school functions like a prison.

Questions:

1) If schools are like prisons in many ways, why are we surprised to see prison social pathologies?

2) Why are children placed in an environment that no adult would tolerate for one minute?

3) Why are children expected to cope with abuse that would win an adult MILLIONS if it happened in a workplace?

The problem is the social media,

Yep. Folks think their "anonymity" online allows them to be complete and total jerks to others ... no matter what. One look at a comments secant at the bottom of a Yahoo article tells you that. So much hate in this world. So sad.

Absolutely heartbreaking. What a beautiful little child.

Anecdotally, it seems this type of street fighting has become some type of sickening sport within the Black community while bystanders eagerly egg on participants, with cellphones at the ready. A decent into brutal animalistic depravity that somehow this little angel got caught up in. So tragic.

Prayers for this family.

Would you give this advice to a coworker?

Why do we expect **children** to cope with an environment that would win an adult MILLIONS in a court settlement?

Doesn’t look like the guy in that video is trying to stop them from fighting.

I would not be surprised at all if he turned out to be the parent of the girl in white.

No emotions necessary to recognize some other more serious problems in play.

It started with the “How do you FEEL about X” movement. My dad taught me nobody cares how you feel about something they just care what you think. Today we teach our kids to be emotional basket cases. You have to feel everything. And worse express your feelings for the world to see on FB and Twitter immediately when you feel them. And G*d forbid someone on social media disagrees with your feelings. Then you spiral down into depression.

Why is a seeming increase in bullying-related suicides occurring - in what seems simultaneously to me - with the large increased public and school attention to bullying in recent years. Is it possible that some high amount of the attention to bullying is having the opposite affect from making bullying victims feel stronger, and instead making them pity themselves even more? Just wondering with the patterns I think I see in this issue. No numbers, just a sense.

Well....When you put kids in a situation where losing a fight causes your parents to ridicule you, it’s easy to lose hope. They encourage you to fight and then call you a punk if you don’t stomp the other kid into a greasy spot.

We have a sub-nation of feral, violent animals and it transcends race. These hillbillies up here are the same way. We had to close the Denny’s here because of it. Cops have to come to the funeral home to prevent brawls between redneck families.

And law enforcement in Virginia arrest a mother for trying to record the bullying of her daughter in school because the school administration and teachers had done nothing about it.

No word about the school authorities or law enforcement looking into the actual bullying itself.

"Ignore the bullies. Nail the mother!"

That's the upside down world that liberals have created for us.

If she was old and/or enough to plan and execute a suicide, she was at least 2 years older than the point where she should have had coping skills.

There are two kinds of DNA in human society. One is biological and humans can do little about it (for the most part). The other is the DNA of culture, and it is sometimes passed down with as much strength as the biological DNA. But there are cures for the cultural DNA, and one of those is for parents who see it as the problem to move, to keep it from being passed to their offspring.

“Then you spiral down into depression...” and demand long and expensive therapy and medications.

A retired psychiatrist-neighbor-golf partner said 1/3 of the people in therapy are nothing but “cringing whiners,” and another 1/3 would be “well” if they got enough exercise to produce sufficient beta-endorphins internally.

Posts like “yours” are ignorant.

The post in 9 asks many important questions, all valid.

In today’s world of “FAKE news” why do you jump to the conclusion that all aspects of this story are true? Or ANY of them?

QUESTION EVERYTHING!!! That is the SMART thing to do in today’s world.

IF, and I mean IF the story is totally accurate, my first inclination was to blame the parents.

Bullying is inevitable. It can be managed, but not eliminated.

Victims of bullying need to be counseled by their parents. Love, faith, empathy, pride, moral support, even self defense.

Children need to have their confidence and self worth elevated. Impart to them that whatever the reason for the bullying, it is NOT their fault.

Bullied children need to be empowered to be able to handle it. Bullying is NEVER going away. Ugly human nature in a fallen world.

Your point is correct, which is why I said the article raises questions. The video is the only “evidence” presented, whereas all the other information in the article is hearsay or opinion by interested parties. Many possibilities here, none of them good.
