The Miss Universe Pageant Is Still Sexist as Hell, and Not What We Need Right Now

Nowhere is the gendered double standard more apparent than in the Miss Universe competition.

While women in all industries face professional hurdles, pageants are one of the only workplaces where they are required to wear ball gowns while doing so. In this annual competition, women are expected to be gorgeous, intelligent, and poised; to look good in a bikini, ace a question-and-answer segment, represent their entire nation and walk perfectly in high heels. Meanwhile Steve Harvey, the reigning male host, automatically exceeds expectations if he manages to read out the correct winner (and was somehow rehired after f***ing up his one and only job).

Tell that to all the women who tune it.

Canada should have won.

I certainly didn’t tune into it and haven’t since the 70’s when we only had one tv channel. Hubby tuned it to it when Steve Harvey was asking the top however many dumb questions and getting even dumber or totally unrelated answers. Even he said one question was stupid. We shook our heads and tuned into something else.

I stopped watching all pageants after they implemented affirmative action.

I like sexism. I like being treated like a man. And my wife likes being treated like a woman. But maybe that’s just us.

How is this really any different for women than a bodybuilding competition is for men?

Me too. It always baffled me how some horrible substandard thing would win only because of the most politically correct background regardless of any other attributes.

One of my friends is really into "Dancing With The Stars". I watched it with her a couple times. And weeks ago I told her who would win, based purely on what the politically correct propagandists wanted to shove down our throats.

How is it different from a bunch of really big guys playing with a ball? Except, of course, the women are expected to be intelligent and many ball players barely made it past eighth grade.

If you don’t like it, you don’t have to watch.

Demanding the women who DO want to participate damn the pageant is intolerance.

Many, many people have viewpoints other than yours, dear.

What is it with “we” and “right now”?
I get this sort of thing a lot.
The assumptions in this sort of thinking are very thick indeed.
Some people seem incapable of distinguishing fashion from morality.

As a pubescent boy in the pre-cable era, I never missed a chance to see beautiful young women scantily clad. Would wait all year for this pageant. Also Battle of the Network Stars, which gave one the opportunity to see women like Lynda Carter, Heather Locklear and Erin Gray in bathing suits.

Amy Zimmerman probably does not look good in a bikini like these ladies. Jealousy!

The (((author))) seems butt hurt.
*Average* women are so threatened by this ‘beauty’ stuff all while selecting the most attractive ‘war paint’ to make the Alpha Males notice them.
Just so catty & shallow.

The more the PC crowd demands I care about their issues the less likely I’m to care. It doesn’t matter what they are talking about or talking up: the cancer of PC tarnishes and pollutes everything it touches. Screw them and the jackass they ride.
