FWIW, I have friends who are Seniors in FL for whom there were no good choices. The path of the hurricane was uncertain, meaning some would've evacuated into the storm. The roads out of FL were jammed and gas was in short supply, meaning the potential of disaster for Seniors with medical conditions and elderly high-maintenance dogs. Those who went to shelters found conditions difficult to being unbearable with all of the confusion and lack of their normal routine.

I get it that for many, especially who live in good over-55 communities, the best of all bad options was to stay in place and depend on the community rec center to be up and running with generators and the services they needed.

For some, it was a situation with no real terrific options.

I think that's what it comes down to. That's why it's a good idea to plan ahead as much as you can.

Planning for children has got to be the #1 priority. Not only are they going to be their parents' primary consideration, but they're going to be difficult to care for under adverse circumstances.

People with children, who didn't plan ahead, could become the most dangerous adversaries. It might be a good idea to stash away some appeasers if you can.

A Greyhound ticket to Nashville or Memphis would have been the B move. (The A move being a $79 Allegient Air ticket to Cincinnati.

But, people who spend their last dime on Lotto tickets usually are tapped out when the storm arrives.
