Why The NBA Will Eventually Overtake The NFL In Popularity And Why It Matters (2year old article)
Forbes ^ | December 12, 2015 | Roger Groves

The NBA is outdueling the NFL in global popularity. There are now about 100 international players in the NBA. The NFL is too distant to be counted in a two League race. The NBA’s critical mass is an economic mass as well. The NBA quite adeptly realized that changing the playing times can increase the international viewership. It increased the number of Sunday early-afternoon games. A 12:30 pm game allows a growing European fan base to watch the games in early evening (7:30 pm). They then have time to finish the game, have a glass of warm milk or alcoholic equivalent, and go to bed in time for work in the morning.

According to Matt Brabants, NBA’s senior VP of global media distributions and business operations, those NBA games have become “appointment viewing” in the 114 countries that the NBA has connectivity . That includes not only Europe, but also the Middle East and Africa. The latter has staggering growth potential.

The NBA also has an inherent economic advantage over the NFL. The highest operating cost for both is salaries of the players. Just as obviously, NBA teams have much lower operating costs because they only need 22 percent of the players needed in the NFL to produce the product. The NBA’s 5 players and a 13-member active roster compares ever-so-favorably to an NFL team that starts 22 different players on a 53-person active roster. Profits are larger when costs are low and revenue skyrockets. Put differently, the NBA needs less revenue to be more profitable because their operating costs are so much lower.

The more profitable one league is over another creates marketing fund advantages as well.

Random observations.

1) Both leagues have a significant proportion of felons.

2) The refereeing in the NBA seems much closer to professional wrestling than any other sport, however, the NFL is catching up.

3) Any league that considers “bullets” a bad word is not going to receive any of my money unless it is from tax dollars.

4) The NBA seems less diverse than the NFL.

5) Both leagues produce too many unmarried mothers. It seems like to me that smoking pot should cause less league penalties than having a child out of wedlock.

If you look at the crowds, MLB and College Football are the closest to normal Americans.

I think the winner in the NFL implosion is likely to be Major League Baseball.

Actually the NBA will be declining on the heels of the NFL.

I believe right now the NBA is more popular outside the US than inside. It is very, very popular in China. I have seen Chinese newscasts where they cover the scores just like a local evening news broadcast here does.

If the NBA viewership collapses inside the US, it would still not bankrupt the league, because of foreign ratings. The teams would just migrate to foreign cities outside the US.

“I’m hoping they both implode.”

Ditto - right there with you! Multiple other posters have already detailed most of the reasons. After players complete their time in college, whether the ridiculous one-and-done or coming out at the 3-year or 4-year mark, I know they’ve been assimilated by the pro-game Borg. I’m through with spending time to watch them.

I guess I was hoping to find out what others see that I don’t. As I said, I know I’m in the minority - and a very small minority. Surely I’m missing something.

Actually, the three (relic imported from the ABA) has damaged the game almost as much as the dunk.

It promotes extreme specialization, even by big men; the low post game is mostly passe.

Move a three addict in (or out) two feet from the line, and watch for the airballs.

I am relieved that I no longer care, and no longer watch: I am fed up with overpaid children who preach political correctness to me.

I watched three games and didn’t see any professional football, either.

Not in my house.

The NBA is WORSE by a factor of 10 than the NFL!

The NBA is nothing more than a bunch of tatted up gang banging thugs who do nothing more than drive the lane looking for a foul.

There's no skill or finesse in the NBA like there was during the Jordan, Johnson, Byrd, Dr. J, Dominique Wilkins, Kobe Bryant, etc.. era's.

The NBA is dead to me and has been for many years. I don't watch anymore.

When Jordan was allowed to push off to shoot the winning shot against Utah and when he and Iverson could routinely take 3 steps to get a shot off, when Magic got the lakers to dump their coach and Kobe got them to trade Shaq, I stopped watching.

I think the winner in the NFL implosion is likely to be Major League Baseball.

And Hockey!

In the last few years, I've abandoned the NFL (I abandoned the NBA long ago ...) and have migrated towards MLB and increased my NHL viewing. I'm a big Chicago Blackhawks fan (have been for decades) and started watching more and more baseball over the past two years as well.

I started watching baseball again two years ago, having given it up after the second MLB strike in the early 2000's. Started watching again when the Cubs were on the uptick and have really enjoyed MLB again and fell back in love with the game.

The NBA and NFL can kiss my lilly white ass far as I'm concerned.

The NBA is absolutely junk basketball at its finest. Why anyone would pay to view the junk is a mystery to me.

I think the NBA will be collateral damage due to the NFL and Baseball will take back the throne.
Baseball is IMHO likely to make at least a relative comeback. Baseball IMHO still has vivid memories from their last strike of what happens when the fans feel put off.

I have been lifelong fan was coach when I was young. I don’t like what the game began. More athleticism than finesse. Basketball was not supposed to turn into football.
