Michelle Obama has a history of making pithy, inspirational remarks. Earlier today, the former First Lady spoke at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford, Connecticut. During that speech she encapsulated in six short words the key to being truly successful:
"Focus on what you can control."
Why is this quote so important? Because when you direct your attention to things you can't control, you're wasting your energy. However, when you focus on what you can control, you're moving closer to your goals.
The most common case of focusing on the uncontrollable in business is trying to bend other people to your will. The manager who orders people about never gets very far; it's the leaders who inspire that change the world.

While I definitely feel that these six short words are the gist of great wisdom, I would be remiss if I didn't include some other inspirational Michelle Obama quotes to give them context. Here are my favorites:
"Being smart is cooler than anything in the world."
"Choose people who lift you up."
"Find people who will make you better."
"Remember who you always were, where you came from, who your parents were, how they raised you."
"Success doesn't count unless you earn it fair and square."
"Success is only meaningful and enjoyable if it feels like your own."
"The one thing people can't take away from you is your education."
"There are still many causes worth sacrificing for, so much history yet to be made."
"When you're not engaged in the day-to-day struggles that everybody feels, you slowly start losing touch."
"Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude."

So Michelle focused on controlling Barack.
Hillary focused on controlling Bill.
I see a pattern here.
“They go high, we go low. Because we’re trash.”
Her own husband stuggles with this one.
We would never have taken the beaches of Normandy thinking like that.
She needs to run for President in 2020.
“Success doesn’t count unless you earn it fair and square.”
So, everything she’s got her whole life doesn’t count.
These quotes make her sound as delusional as Hillary.
Liberals really do live in an alternate, upside-down reality.
A $300,000 job with the Medical Center of the University of Chicago?
The largest staff of an Office supporting the First Lady in our history?
“Focus on what you can control.”
Actually....understanding and predicting forces well outside one’s control is often critical to success. And you can’t understand something without focus.
I don’t control gravity, but I’d better know how it affects me. A business cannot control the growth of the Internet, but a lot of stores have gone out of business by ignoring it.
An investor cannot control tax law, but he’d better focus on it some of the time.
Hillary couldn’t control Bill, but she might not be a bitter old shrew if she had divorced him early on.
So....
... Focus on nothing.
I say her same thing, but with a different twist: This list of what you can and can’t control changes as you get older. As you become a parent, as you become a boss, a home-owner, etc.
Start with this, millenials - Clean your damned living quarters.
I mean seriously, everyone seems to skip this crucial step and then they wonder why they are surrounded by things they can’t control. Don’t see what’s right in front of their noses.
Neither Hillary nor Michelle controlled their spouses. It’s one reason Hillary and Michelle were/are so angry all the time.
Bill spent his time as he pleased—with a fair share always devoted to skirt chasing. Obama spent his time with Reggie Love as long as he could, and with ESPN after that.
Hillary throws ashtrays and lamps, and Michelle lectures the little people (and hitches rides on gay billionaires’ yachts). The men in these two relationships are ultimately more in control than the women.
Better: Trust in God through Jesus Christ.
“I see a pattern here.”
Yes. The pattern is “dont marry fugly women”.
Verbum satire
Did she mention being black and grabbing all the affirmative action benefits? I had a friend who was born into major wealth. I called him lucky once. He said “If you think it’s so easy, you try it.”
What would she know about being successful?
