According to Focus, they have learnt from investigator circles that the arrested suspects were photographing rubbish bins, installed at hip height, on Kennedyplatz, where the Christmas Market will open soon. Investigators think this means the suspects intended to plant explosive devices in the rubbish bins. The suspects were also scouting the Limbecker Platz shopping mall and the nearby Rathaus-Galerie mall.
According to Hessenschau, data storage devices, mobile phones and laptops, and documents were seized. The investigators also found city maps of Essen with the Christmas Market location marked.

So sad. Theres nothing like these wintry Christmas markts in Germanic Europe. So magical and beautiful. Really the last place these monsters should ever be allowed to Destroy.
The idea has spread. We are going to the Christmas markets in Seville, Spain on December 5th. It's not Germany but it's warmer and probably safer. Our next German trip will be Rothenberg.

Rothenberg is a major tourist destination. I spent the weekend there.
It was just “okay”. Bus load after bus load of tourists.
But, yes, the Christmas markets in Germany and Austria are something to behold.
