Well, Jones was some looker! I’m sure women threw themselves at him. I still admire his beauty in Ryan’s Daughter. Did you know he’s dubbed in the film? He couldn’t do the British accent so Lean had his voice replaced. Sarah Miles - never my favorite either, Chris. (He was married to Susan Strasberg, btw.)
No, I didn't know he was dubbed, but I wondered why Lean chose an American. I can't mimic that Brit accent worth a darn. It doesn't spoil it for me. Sarah I thought was cast too old for Jones, but I looked up their birth dates, and they were very close, both born in 1941. I went back and looked at a few clips. They don't have the full uninterrupted pub passion scene any more, copyright probably. At this point, I guess I wouldn't want anybody else for the part. I didn't like Julie Christie cast as Lara either; but now nobody else would seem to fit. And a gap-toothed, brown-eyed Egyptian for Dr. Zhivago? What was Lean thinking? But he did a good job, and again I can't imagine anybody I'd prefer. Even the remake was beautiful but not the same.
Now that part of windswept coastal Ireland has no trees that I could tell. They moved part of the filming to South Africa. I don't know which scenes were done there but would like to.
Finally, I knew he had been married to Susan Strasberg, think I saw her in Picnic. Thought there was one other but it's not important. Maybe they are making more of his relationship with Sharon Tate by saying he became depressed after her murder and dropped out of filming.
I then read he lived in a place of the CA coast with his SEVEN children. Wonder how he accumulated enough money to live like that. That was a shocker. He and his brother were sent to an orphanage in TN after his grocer father sent his mother to a mental institution for pulling a gun on him. But maybe he inherited a depression gene. Who knows? Died in 2014 at 72 from complications from gall bladder cancer. Wish him peace in a better world.
