HARRISBURG, Pa — Emotions were high inside the Harrisburg School Board meeting Monday night as The Harrisburg Education Association pleaded with the board for help following violent encounters in the classrooms at elementary schools throughout the district. First grade teacher Johanna Brown describes what's going on in her classroom at Downey Elementary, saying to the school board, "Are we getting hurt? This bruise is from last Friday.”....

Brown described a student in her room, saying, “She will kick and hit her classmates. She will throw the entire contents of her desk at every single student just to get attention."...

“I have been kicked, hit, punched scratched. I’ve had a student physically restrain me in front of my other students, grabbing my arms from behind where I was unable to move," First Grade Teacher Amanda Shaeffer said. Educators asked the board for more training when it comes to mental health and trauma situations, along with better communication with administrators.

Parents and grandparents got up to speak too, one woman stating her foster son has been bullied by other children and the teacher needs help.

“She needs help. The kids in her room are so out of control, how are you supposed to be sitting here working when someone’s going underneath another child’s desk with permanent marker writing all over their sneakers," Lorraine Badget said.

Please be serious.

This is one of the worst school districts in the country, and don't let the teachers kid you: they are a huge part of the problem. Several school superintendents have been removed for corruption over the last twenty years. About fifteen years ago, so many students were failing to make minimum standards that the mayor took direct control of the school board, sparking a Constitutional confrontation with the Commonwealth.

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette annually ranks high schools in Pennsylvania. The #500 school is in Philadelphia, and it graduates something like 6% of its students at minimum proficiency. Guess what? Harrisburg High isn't even ranked their rating is so low.

Harrisburg had a large white ethnic Catholic population (although a lot of them have left the city.) Those that remain go to Parish grade schools, or to Bishop McDevitt, which is one of the largest high schools in PA. Jewish kids go to the Harrisburg Academy. Very few white kids are in public school.

Yes, there’s a plan. And it specifically uses our schools.

Familiar with The Frankfurt School? Moved here in the 1940’s. Concensus building and sensitivity training came from those people.

They’re just trying to make a smooth transition from home to school to prison.
