They had the misfortune of living at the address where somebody involved with Manson had lived.
Manson sent his killers to the address, not knowing or caring who they murdered.

The supreme court of the USA ruled the death penalty unconstitutional shortly after Mansons conviction. His sentence commuted to life because of that.
You are correct and I stand corrected, that being said Rose Bird and Moonbeam did and moonbeam does still deny the will of the people of California on the death penalty and why Rose Bird was booted.
