“I truly do not understand people who enjoy running.”
I’ve never understood it, either! Yes, walk! Stay active! Chop wood, Carry water!
I was in the Army for, for-ever and I hated every MINUTE that I had to run, whether training for, or enduring, a fitness test each year. 4am 5 mile runs? TORTURE! Or the REALLY, ‘fun’ runs in full gear.
I mean, I could DO it, but I sure didn’t WANT to, LOL!
The sit-ups and push-ups? Easy Peasy. Again, Chop wood, Carry water. ;)

Every runner I see, looks as if they are taking their dying breath.
Not one, ever looks happy.

I ran for 30 years. I hated it.
But I sure liked the resulting physical fitness.
I haven’t been running for 18 months, due to injury and illness.
I hate the lack of aerobic fitness far more than I hated running.

I would tell you not to let your run experience in the Army dictate your feelings about that particular activity (especially since it really is good for you). I felt the same way as you. I love lifting, but running is the absolute worst. It was always torture, and I always felt like hell afterwards. So I didn't do it unless I was forced to which means my APFTs are touch-and-go.
I recently read this book as well as some of Dr. Phil Maffetone's stuff online and it really changed my perception and how I train.
My non-running ass now does multiple five milers a week. This week alone I've put in 30 miles, and I feel fine. It's amazing to be able to run at an easy pace and steadily get faster with no real increase in exertion.
