The movie was made during the late years of the Cold War and Iron Curtain.

That movie was released in 1981 and I guarantee you it was not the late years of the Cold War. The Berlin Wall came down in 1989 and the cold War officially ended in September of 1992 when Bush 1 ordered the SAC Alert bombers and all the Minuteman II missiles to stand down.

While that movie was being made the Soviets were doing things that gave us an itchy trigger finger and I was on a couple of Alerts where we thought we were possibly going to war.

1981 vs 1989, that was late in the Cold War; the point is, it's not the same Europe. Glad the USSR is dead, and my thanks to you and others who served, and of course, President Ronald Reagan, who led us to Bush I's victory.
