PHOENIX - One of Bill Gates' investment firms has spent $80 million to kickstart the development of a brand-new community in the far West Valley.
The large plot of land is about 45 minutes west of downtown Phoenix off I-10 near Tonopah.
The proposed community, made up of close to 25,000 acres of land, is called Belmont. According to Belmont Partners, a real estate investment group based in Arizona, the goal is to turn the land into its own "smart city."

A truly smart city project would be built near a copious water supply, ideally desalinated water drawn from a nearby ocean; it would rely on photovoltaic electricity, in fact, would require it for each domicile; it would require heating and cooling using buried heat exchangers; and of course, it would charge admission, because it would be a newer, larger, live-in version of EPCOT. ;^) Thanks qaz123.
Will they name it New Babel or Akhetaton, AZ?
I’m going to Gatesland!
I believe the Society for Creative Anachronism took care of that. The Arizona chapter named their “kingdom” Atenveldt.
Let me guess, that’s what is left of Arcosanti?
LOL! Well, there you go. Must be pyramid power.
Interesting. Soviet capitalism, sort of.
Bill Gates is another elite loser who has accomplished zero with his billions.
Silicon Valley is a series of do nothing monopolists.
Bingo!
Well, it’s Gates’ money...let him do what he wants with it. At heart, I think he is a hippie. We’ll see what he spawns in the desert. :)
Raccoon City - and the workers will go underground to the hive every day (Resident Evil reference)
Sounds like a good place for a Handyman to move to. A whole town of geeks who are 24/7 connected to wifi but need to hire someone to pound a nail in the wall to hang a picture.
Its Gates and Microsoft. Will he intentionally build five year obsolescence into the city and then tell its residents they are no longer supported?
He is able to get a permit there but he won’t give credit to conservatives.
But how many tax credits, etc will he try to swindle Arizona out of, when he realizes that he needs help? It’d be great if it was all just “his own money”. Let him take the roll the dice. But, if he has to go to Arizona for ANYTHING, they should tell him to pound salt up his a$$.
Didn’t think about that, but you’re 100% right.
I have an acquaintance, definition of a hipster, that posted a video of her boyfriend using a chainsaw. It was him using a small, pruning saw to trim a small branch from a tree in her front yard. You’d a thought he was taking down an 80’ Spruce tree to start their log cabin build in the woods
Kind of felt sorry for the guy, that she would expose the fact that she’s dating a chick. Oh well!!!
who’s water will he use for it?
I used to work with a hipster type. We needed to build a small frame out of 2x4’s. I marked the stud locations and had to leave for about 30 minutes. When I returned he almost had one nail in.
This guy had never once held a hammer. About 2 minutes later I had the structure built. Sad
Hahahaha!!!!
If it weren’t for the recent Veterans, this country would be so utterly screwed that it’s painful to think about.
