I remember Istanbul being overrun with cats. They were all over the campus where I taught. The students fed them. They even overran the compound around the church I attended. Muslims think dogs are dirty and have nothing to do with them. I guess they transfer to cats the affection Westerners have for dogs. I'm a cat person (one sitting on my lap now), so I appreciated the cat population of Istanbul.

I have wondered how they keep the population of cats in check and how the tradition came to be.
Yes, I confess to being a cat fancier. Ours are outsiders and get put in the barn at night and stay in there on bad days. We do our best to protect them from coyotes. Lots of things prey on cats and they don’t know to be afraid until it is too late.
