Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Director Freeman Martin said that the neighbor, who has not yet been named, had 'grabbed his rifle and engaged the suspect.'.
Martin said that during the gunfight, Kelley dropped his Ruger assault rifle and got back in his SUV to flee the scene.
But another local resident, Johnnie Langendorff, who had witnessed the confrontation refused to let the shooter get away. Both he and the unnamed neighbor jumped in his truck and gave chase.
In a Facebook post, Langendorff's girlfriend Summer Caddel described how the pair had 'jumped in my boyfriend's truck and they chased that sick b*****d down in pursuit until the cops could catch up. He was able to run the shooter off of the road on 539!'
Langendorff told KSAT 12 that he'd been speeding at 95mph, while on the phone to dispatch, while the neighbor kept his rifle trained on the gunman's car.
As they approached a sharp curve in the road, near the 307 and 539, he said Kelley appeared to lose control and his car swerved off the road.
'That's when I put the truck in park,' he said. 'The other gentleman jumped out, and had his rifle on him. He didn't move after that.'
Caddel added that Kelley was gunned down within a few feet from her boyfriend.
Martin confirmed that police had found Kelley dead, saying that: 'We are not sure if it was self inflicted or if he was shot by a local resident.'
Cops also found multiple weapons and possible explosives in the vehicle.

That NEVER happens right? Thanks folks.
Many thanks for the info on the hero !
From family’s post:
“...Kelley was not a resident of the area of the church. He drove to get there from a suburb of San Antonio. ...”
Now the question is,
why drive all the way from a suburb of San Antonio to that small town church ??
Many thanks for the info on the hero !

Johnny rocks! Heroes can drive trucks, too!
Just can’t wait to hear the name of the guy who fired on the perp, who fled and died.
Reportedly,.... the hero shooter used the same type weapon as the perp. Did he commit suicide, or take a death shot from the same weapon, is a question they are sure slow to clarify.
i read someone said he used a shotgun? (The hero- not the perp) not sure where they got the info from
Reportedly,...... the killers mother had a post office box in this town. That is the only connection I have heard, so far. (News accuracy early on is another question.) :/
Both are clearly heroes. Chasing some crazed gunman who just slaughtered 25+ people at a church at speeds of 95 mph takes a little ____s (nerve). He genuinely risked his life voluntarily going after this dangerous guy so he wouldn't get away. And all because he thought it was the right thing to do. A whole lot of guys out there would not have done it.
Of course, the unidentified hero is a really special kind of hero for doing the incredibly brave things he did and putting an end to the threat. First, what he did at the church, then how he held the creep at gunpoint, and even perhaps shot and killed the guy himself. In any case, we'll find out more about what actually happened in in the days to come.
I did hear that, as well.
Too much information causes so much mis-information by the media at this early point.
Another *good-guy-with-a-gun* stops the carnage; like in lower Manhattan. This will be unnoticed [again] by the deep state media.
“The hero was the guy with the gun. We dont even know his name.”
They were both heroes...fully and completely.
Many thanks for that info!
Amen to that! And Johnny rocks! Didn’t mean to sound that he wasn’t the coolest kid there.. an easy hero.
I’m just so anxious to hear who the actual hero shooter is.
Now the question is, why drive all the way from a suburb of San Antonio to that small town church??
Good question.
This might have something to do with a possible motive...
The Texas church madman was a disgraced Air Force veteran who was court-marshaled in 2012 after assaulting his wife and child, reports said.
Devin Patrick Kelley, who joined the military in 2010,was given a dishonorable discharge and slapped with 12 months of confinement in 2014 after his court marshaling, CBS News reported.
The military said Sunday that Kelly served in Logistics Readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 2010 until his discharge.
The Pentagon also confirmed that Kelley was an airman at one point, but did not provide additional details.
Kelly was married and lived in a wooded area on the rural, western outskirts of New Braunfels, north of San Antonio.
His mother-in-law has a post-office box in Sutherland Springs, where he launched his massacre, about 50 minutes away.

Absolutely! That’s what I said, as well. An easy hero. No questions asked. He just hit the petal and roared off.
Seems that some seem to think Johnny was the hero shooter. I was just clarifying to that point.
Looks like the m-i-l had the p.o. box.
See bitt’s post:

Did the m-i-l attend that church?
Thank you. I had not heard it was the mother-in-law. Lots of info to filter.
I do hope the Texas LE can deliver the basic details sooner than the Las Vegas LE were allowed to do, once the FBI arrived.
Thanks for the NY Post link. But there was a good amount of detail in the Daily Mail article I posted as well. They always seem to have long, detailed articles.
