False Alarm After Man Mistakes Large Courgette (Zucchini) Garden for WWII Bomb
The Local ^ | 3 November 2017

Posted on 11/03/2017 8:53:30 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Police were alerted on Thursday when a man in a south German town called them and told them he had found a Second World War bomb in his garden.

But when the police arrived at the 81-year-old man’s house in Betten, Baden-Württemberg, they did not find a bomb - explosive ordinance disposal services did not have to be called after all.

After close inspection, officers deemed that what the man had found was not a bomb, but rather, a large courgette - much to the senior citizen’s relief.

Approximately 40 centimetres in length with a weight of about five kilograms, the vegetable is thought to have been thrown over the hedge into the man’s garden by an unknown person.

According to the police, the man then took care of disposing of the courgette.

But it beats us whether this means he threw it in the rubbish bin, gave it to someone else or cut it up, cooked it and ate it himself.

We literally dropped thousands of those on Germany during the war.

If he only saw the blunt end of it, I could see mistaking it for a mortar round. Better safe than sorry. Keeps your epitaph from being, "He thought it was a zucchini."

I went to the store once and someone had filled a shopping cart with zucchini and parked it outside the door with a free sign.

About 10 years ago I planted some zucchini seed. Every single zucchini those bushes put out was huge. One was enough fried up for 4 people. No telling how big they would’ve got if I hadn’t picked and ate them.
I haven’t been able to find any seeds or plants like that since. I’ve looked.

I’ve heard so many stories about the ‘mysterious gift’ of over-abundant zucchini ;-)

I’ve never understood why something that grows so madly tends to be so expensive in city supermarkets. It’s the main ingredient in my favorite soup, and seems to go up in price every Summer...

LOL! In what state did that happen?

The woman I spoke to in Maine made a wonderful zucchini relish with her bumper crop. Fantastic on grilled kielbasi. Made me a believer.

That’s funny. I guess I don’t mind because zucchini is one of my favorites. All the extras get cubed up and frozen for the winter. I like them in my zucchini & potato soup and my minestrone.

"Leesten very carefully, I will say this only once. The bombs will be disguised as courgettes and delivered by a man disguised as a vegetable seller"
