California National Guard Spc. James Richter, Sgt. Leslie Anderson and Spc. Jaleel Brown try to open a gun safe as they search through debris for human remains and valuables to secure on Wembley Court in Larkfield-Wikiup, on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017. (BETH SCHLANKER/ The Press Democrat)

In general, this would be unconstitutional. Once the gun safe is in the open in the burned-out remains of a destroyed neighborhood, it's an entirely different question. I still don't approve, but it's far less obviously nefarious. This is not the same as disarming people still in their own homes after Hurricane Katrina.

I agree.

I think this is not so much as to disarm the people (even though it is moonbeam’s Californistan) but people may put stuff like passports and other important documents in these safes. So it maybe a matter of matching up the documentation found (if any) at the remains and the missing persons roster.
