Can In delete it after it's been 'fixed' without setting up a virus problem, or a program that will fail to operate ?

Yes, you can safely delete it. If you accidentally mount the disk, eject it, then delete the file. Luckily, there is no auto-execute on such a mounted disk image. The likelihood in any case is what was found on the file is a buried Windows malware that can’t even install on a Mac. . . that’s usually the case.
