The sound in Havana: What Americans heard in Cuba attacks

It sounds sort of like a mass of crickets. But not quite. A high-pitched whine, but from what? It seems to undulate, even writhe. Listen closely: Some hear multiple, distinct tones colliding in a nails-on-the-chalkboard effect.

The Associated Press has obtained a recording of what some U.S. Embassy workers heard in Havana, part of the series of unnerving incidents later deemed to be deliberate attacks. The recording, released Thursday by the AP, is the first disseminated publicly of the many taken in Cuba of sounds that led investigators initially to suspect a sonic weapon.

The recordings from Havana have been sent for analysis to the U.S. Navy, which has advanced capabilities for analyzing acoustic signals, and to the intelligence services, the AP has learned. But the recordings have not significantly advanced U.S. knowledge about what is harming diplomats. Officials say the government still doesn’t know what is responsible for injuries to its personnel, but the U.S. has faulted Cuba for failing to protect American diplomats on its soil.

The Navy and the State Department did not respond to requests for comment on the recording. Cuba has denied involvement or knowledge of the attacks.

I thought I didn’t hear it until I cupped my ears. Could someone place a dog in the room while you play the clip? I would like to know the dog’s reaction.

left me with tinnitus that sounds like that.

I hear the exact same noise too. Fortunately it disappears when I stop thinking about it...........

We're surrounded by noise that we just naturally tune out. I live a half mile from a major six lane highway and when I go to bed, that's the only time I hear the traffic, but only briefly.

I grew up in northern Michigan and lived outside of town. I could go out in the back yard at night and when tuned into the surroundings, I could hear things creeping in the dead leaves, like worms and stuff. Pretty cool when you are focusing.......

Why did Cuba do such a thing? I thought O had befriended them? Normalized relations and all that? Don’t tell me the Cubancoms can’t be trusted?

I wonder what the explanation is for that working.

I wonder what the explanation is for that working.

There appears to be some sort of nerve complex where they are pressing. I severely damage my inner ear on the right side years ago scuba diving. Mostly deaf on that side.

If I press in just the right spot as these folks were doing, I get a "bubbling" sound in my "ear". Obviously no sound at all, just stimulating some nerve to send an auditory signal?

That’s interesting.

I had trigeminal neuralgia for a few years - horrible problem nicknamed ‘suicide disease’ because folks have killed themselves over the pain; at the time they didn’t know much about it but may know more now (mine wasn’t the typical problem, but caused by a cracked tooth that they took forever to discover). There’s a nerve involved that starts somewhere in back of the head and goes out to each side of your face. I wonder if that has anything to do with this ‘thumping’ technique...

When I was very young, I had spectacular hearing and could hear well outside the normal range of hearing for humans.

It was back in the days of televisions with vertical and horizontal hold, and my grandma's bedroom was about two doors down. When the vertical hold went out of whack, she'd call me to fix it... she was already in bed.

Butg the curious thing was, I could HEAR when the vertical hold went out. The super-high-pitched whine of the TV would change. No one could hear it but me. They started to think I was psychic.

I used that fear to rule the household like some horrible Twilight Zone episode.

Tried to find a good diagram of the nerves in the skull to spot what I was pressing on. Never did get a satisfactory look.

The ENT I went to after blowing out my ear was baffled by my explanation of the "sounds" and no idea what caused them. A neurologist may have had a clue.

Not too uncommon... I could do the same thing.

Creepy, I had the same experience as you Laz. Tinfoil and rabbit ears made me a controlling master of my entire family..........

That all came to and end when they got cable.
