I think that philosophically (not legally, before someone has a cow ...), a person can be sexually harassed, and it is still harassment even if the person puts up with it. One of the points of harassment, after all, is to wear down the target so that he or she will “willingly” “consent” to something that’s not wanted.

In a different context, some of my teenagers are excellent at this. They hassle me until I “willingly” do what they want, even though I don’t want to and don’t think it’s the right idea. It leaves me feeling angry both with them and with myself.

I think that is a sensible approach...

Well, if Weinstein never did anything at all to Lohan, and she never heard a thing about any of this until this week, she may be afraid he’s going to commit suicide. HW’s about to pay dearly — as well he should — for any bad things he’s done — but people who have called him their friend, and have benefited from his friendship, have a moral obligation to stand by him. Also, I am curious from a legal perspective whether women such as Rose McGowan could be in hot water for speaking out after having taken money from Weinstein. Usually pay-offs are in exchange for confidentiality.

>>>“claiming that Weinstein never harassed her”<<<

Of course not, Lindsay. Harvey ‘did’ have some standards . . .

"claiming that Weinstein never harassed her"

No one said he didn't have any standards.

"...but people who have called him their friend, and have benefited from his friendship, have a moral obligation to stand by him..."

I agree with most of what you have said, but I disagree with this. I think the decision to stand by someone is highly dependent on circumstances, though if I were his friend and I didn't know about this stuff (very dubious, seems like everyone knew) I would stand by him until there was proof, and at the least, wouldn't throw him under the bus.

There are different ways of standing by a friend. Jesus said we should visit people in prison, so I don't think deserting friends is ever an option. I am skeptical about the “rape” charges and would be inclined to believe Harvey Weinstein that he at least believed his sexual contact was consensual. However, what has been described was immoral, boorish, adulterous, unethical. If I were his friend, I would tell him to take his lumps. I wouldn't denounce him publicly, which I find to be grandstanding. I would NOT have encouraged him to try to save his job. He has years of work ahead of him in the form of repairing his relationships with his children and his brother. he should try to save his marriage. Also, he is Jewish and probably has given generously to Jewish causes. It's time to start practicing Judaism. Of course, he should make financial and personal amends to any women he did embarrass or harass.

I know people who know Harvey Weinstein. He has been personally helpful and generous to many people — and I am not snarkily alluding to sexual tit-for-tat. Those people owe him loyalty, even - perhaps, especially — at a time like this.

My thought as well. If not consenting behavior, it was requested by her and was highly-desired behavior!

So, she was one of the ones who went along willingly to assure her career advancement (then screwed herself up and blew it anyway)?

If you contract with a prostitute for a rape-fantasy, how can you tell when the NO really means no? If you are use sexual favors as a job requirement, how can you tell when the YES doesn't mean yes?

I don’t think we completely disagree on this...I think it boils down to what we mean by “stand by a friend”, IOW, defining the terms.

We could probably agree it doesn’t mean blindly supporting someone while condemning the accusers.
