At least there’s a lighter side of cheating the system:

When I drove for Trailways some of my pick up points were unmanned. One cold night there was an elderly lady among the crowd with a canary in a cage. Someone had dropped her off and left. Some of the crowd had told her that she could not take the bird on the bus, in fact they seemed to be enjoying her anxiety over it. I walked over to her and said “You must be the lady who needs the canary for your carbon monoxide sensitivity. Is there anything else we can do for you?” She looked puzzled for a moment, then broke into a big grin. On they went. I filled the next driver in on her connection and he continued the charade.

The service dog is lucky to have survived.

This service dog crap turned out the same way the disability license plates did.

In the beginning, the programs served those who really needed them - blind or wheelchair bound.

But now, everyone is gaining access to these services.

I don't care how bad your knees or hips are. Not in a wheelchair? Park with everyone else.

Scared to be around strangers? Leave your dog at home and stay with it, or man up and face the public.

Wow, you guys are tough. I dared to suggest that animals, even real, trained, legit, certified service animals shouldn’t be on planes unless in a comfortable cage in the hold and still can’t sit down.

The bleeding heart FReeper crowd scorched my backside with all the flaming.

It didn’t change my opinion though. I was discussing this with a co-worker today and she told me she was on a flight where a blind guy was trying to share his seat with his leader dog. It was very unfair to the dog. I mean, it’s not like the dog is going to find his seat number for him. In reality the dog can do nothing for him for the several hours of the flight.

That said, abuse of service animal credentials is rampant. You need to pet something to feel good, get a teddy bear when you’re in public. I get that a pet may make you comfortable, but life ain’t always comfortable.

a pet peeve of mine is all theses pets that are being called service animals. I truly believe that service animals are necessary for a portion of the population but like the handicap parking we have a growing population that are claiming animals with no training are service animals.

I would love to see a requirement of certification for a service dogs and the ability of establishments to request documentation. at this point in the state of California a restaurant or hotel has to except the persons word that a animal is a service animal.
I had an aunt who participated in the raising of seeing eye dogs and later in life had a service dog that was trained to walk at her side to hold her steady and pick up objects for her. it takes a lot of effort to train service dogs and not every animal makes it through the training. the idea that someone can take a pet dog and say that it has been trained makes it harder for those that have service dogs.

For sociopaths, attacking other people and their dogs may be considered a valuable service.

I keep hearing people say that pit bulls are not mean or aggressive. It’s not true. Don’t tell us that lie any more.

pisses me off that there are people claiming to have a service dog in order to take their dogs where ever they go.

Anyone attacked by Pit or other dog, or whose dog so attacked, sue the owner, sue the property owner, sue until you extract an ounce of gold for every ounce of negligence that caused you or your dog the harm.

One of my dogs was attacked by a pit that was (mis)handled by a rescue operation. I had to gouge its eyes to make it let go. I made it clear that they would be held responsible, and a law suit was avoided by them putting it down right away.
