What does something like that mean? A decision was made. WHO made that decision? I just hate this kind of writing.
It seems the important part of that is the decision, not the decider. Does it matter if it was his wife, his mother or his daughter?

When the patient is essentially dead or dying, the medical team try to identify the responsible family members.
They check if the patient has “end of life instruction,” which might be found with hospital or primary doctor records.
At some point the hospital needs to get a decision. They don’t want to just pull the plug, on their own.
And often it is not pretty or easy. Four months ago my MIL passed away at 90. Her sons and daughters were emotional and blamed the hospital of killing her, not her age, her cancer, or the major surgery complications that kept her in ICU for 30 days before death.
Still they have to deal with it.
