The FBI is required by federal law to destroy all records of NICS background checks within 24 hours - as a safeguard to protect our Constitutional gun rights.

The background check records are not to be kept, but the record of the gun purchase is kept by a Federally licensed firearms dealer indefinitely—i.e. forever.
And these records are to be produced upon any request by the Feds.
