Hunter Found Safe After Getting Lost in Cicero Swamp

After a nearly two-hour search, a missing hunter was found safe early Saturday morning in the Cicero Swamp.

A man in his 30s went hunting with friends Friday in the Cicero Swamp area, said Sgt. Jon Seeber, of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. When he failed to return to his friends by sunset, he was reported as missing.

The Cicero Police Department responded to the swamp at 10:48 p.m. Officers and deputies searched the ground while Air 1, the department's helicopter, searched from above, Seeber said.

The Air 1 flight crew used night vision goggles, an infrared camera and a NightSun light to search for the missing hunter. At 12:38 a.m., the flight crew spotted the man near the Chittenango Creek, Seeber said.

The pilot landed Air 1 by the creek and checked on the hunter, Seeber said. Deputies and officers -- along with South Bay, Bridgeport and Minoa firefighters -- then responded to the creek and led the man out of the swamp.

The man was evaluated and is in good health, Seeber said.

You don’t go into the sticks or swamp without a compass, idiot.

Hope he learns the lesson.

Many a hunter instead of finding food, have become food. Yet if it were not for hunters, most of today’s humanity would not exist.Farming and ranching is a relatively recent development in human history. Humanity would have never reached that milestone without competent hunters.

I was in junior high school only ten miles from there in Fayetteviille, NY.

Funny, Mom and Dad never took us to that swamp. Guess they had swamps closer to home where they’d try to dump us, but we always found our way home. I always kept a compass, signaling mirror, pocketknife, and waterproof matches in my pants pocket “just in case.”

It’s called natural selection. When did we, as a species, stop taking nature seriously? Making pets out of predators, trekking in the wilderness-Not things to be taken lightly

Well, if you ever go back into Cicero Swamp, well, you
better not go at night
There's things out there in the middle of them woods
That'd make a strong man die from fright

Sounds like you grew up like me. Pocket knife, matches, compass...

Always made it home before Ma and Pa moved. Even when they sold me to the Gypsies in the traveling carnival!

I grew up in West Texas and South Louisiana. In West Texas I could look at the Mountains and knew where I was. In South Louisiana Swamps it was the Sun that told me where I was and also one knows where the bayous are and where they go. I was more concerned with snakes than getting lost. Do not do the swamp at night unless you are in a boat.

Those are lyrics from an old CDB song called Wooley Swamp. Mr. D still plays it at shows. Haunting story - crowd favorite :)

It may have been more serious if he got lost in the Washington swamp that hasn’t been drained yet!

Two hours? Isn’t that rather a short time to be considered lost?

I spent two hours on a freeway interchange once and I wasn’t lost1

Yep - and know where the roads run so going in a general direction can bring you to one of them if you get totally lost. Used to hunt in areas where if you got around the end of a road and kept going, it might be 20 or more miles before another and it would be possible to wander for a looooong time w/o seeing civilization (a dirt road that had been driven on in the last 5 days)....

He was missing overnight. The search took a little less than two hours.

I’ve never been lost myself, but there have been times when my destination went astray.

There is excellent cell coverage in the Cicero Swamp area.

I have Mil-GPS app on my phone, or in the absence of that, the maps app on the phone will suffice. Mark the location of the vehicles as a waypoint, and use where necessary.

What a dope.

He was reported missing at sunset, (6:45), his return time. He was found about 8 hours later. Ok, that’s a little long, and late.

Thought I was lost a few times, for a few minutes. Not a good feeling.
