I have heard Vista was a dog..but it is my first and only computer so of course I didn’t notice the difference many seemed to complain about. ....Still using Windows 7....opted not to change.
I agree about MS....it’s about booting people fro what they like to buy their recent products and this by force.
“I wasted many hours playing that old pinball game that came with Windows 98.”
LOL! We just found an old Dell laptop in the back of a drawer with XP. Pinball is on it. I copied it in to my Windows 10 laptop. Is is addicting. (I’d like to get Majong Titans, which is on the Windows 7 laptop in another room.)
[[Do you have a choice? Ive heard, and believe, that its done whether you want it or not.]]
Yes- run linux as main online os- and windows 10 in dual boot mode and refuse to allow it access to Internet lol
I’d rather all you guys switch to new games anyway, like World of Tanks Blitz. It’s free!
I've had similar problems with Mint on a couple of machines. I agree with you that it's probably just your graphics driver.
If your motherboard has built-in graphics you could try removing your NVIDIA card and connecting your monitor to the motherboard. If the graphics work in this setup you could then go ahead and download all of the updates for your version of Linux. Then reinstall your graphics card and reboot to see if the Linux generic NVIDIA driver will run.
I've done this a few times with success.
I've running older NVIDIA cards on my two Linux Mint machines. Mint 17.3 32-Bit runs the proprietary NVIDIA driver just fine.
My other machine is running 18.2 KDE 64-Bit. The NVIDA driver for this machine gave me a lot of quirky problems. This machine actually runs better using the generic Linux Nouveau driver.
In one of these machines (can't remember which) I actually had to go into the BIOS and flick a switch off to get the graphics to behave.
Sounds like you know the source of the problem.
Good luck!
I used to play, and love, the game “Double Trouble” — the original, not the revised version. Can’t find it anywhere!!
“Wonder (update) if that is why when I try and open an excel document it trys to open in the new excel 365 (wants me to buy) even though it was created on excel office 2007? Started happening a few days ago?”
Can you right-click on the file, and click on the “open with” option”? If so, it’ll give you a list of suggested programs. If the Office 2007 Excel option doesn’t show up, at the very end it should let you find the program on the PC. Then just find it in the file path where it’s installed. I’ve been doing that for a long time now, except that I’m going to Office 2003 instead of the 365 junk.
“lol”
What’s “lol” about that?
I just looked at the specs for your computer. No motherboard graphics.
If you have an older graphics card you might try slipping that in temporarily to see if you can finish updating the Mint OS.
well most people want to use windows as their main os- not allowing it Internet access won’t appeal to many- I use linux as my online os and windows 7 as my offline only os for games and photoshop and programs that only work in windows- but that scvenario won’t work for some
“most people want to use windows as their main os”
Oh... OK. I get it. I’m not a tech wiz (any more — used to be before retiring) so just deal with the general basics. Changing over to a different operating system is something I couldn’t take on.
That Creators Update makes my Asus cm1745 crash and lock up like crazy so I had to replace the drive and install Linux Mint 18.2 and it works great ,even games on Playonlinux . The win 10 drive is over there hiding ,I stick it back in once in awhile for updates to see if they fixed anything , so far no go
Dang - complexity of that install and configuration exceeds my patience. But thanks for the tip.
My ASUS Ultra Zenbook laptop has Creators Update - absolutely ZERO problems and seems to manage memory better.
I bought a used Apple...problem solved!!!

The spell correction in the latest Windows 10 is no good : )
