The Democratic Coalition the political group that filed an ethics complaint against Donald Trump over the weekend has filed a second complaint with the Department of Justice Tuesday, TheWrap has learned.
The group is asking the DOJ whether the president violated federal law when he called on NFL owners to fire players who kneel in protest during the national anthem.
Since there are both ethical and criminal components to President Trumps actions in this case, we have filed formal complaints with both OGE and DOJ, Democratic Coalition chairman Jon Cooper told TheWrap. Considering the serious nature of this matter, it is our expectation that the complaints will receive full and fair consideration by both agencies.
The group cited a statute which makes it a crime punishable by a fine or up to 15 years in prison or both, for the president, as well as members of Congress and other federal officials, to influence or threaten to influence a private companys hiring practices solely on the basis of partisan political affiliation.
We respectfully request that the U.S. Department of Justice investigate these potential criminal violations and take all appropriate disciplinary actions against President Trump, the coalition wrote in its complaint, addressed to Acting Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Blanco of the Justice Departments Criminal Division.
Trump kicked up a media firestorm Friday when he suggested during a rally in Alabama that coaches should get the son of a b players off the field if they continued to kneel. The comments triggered widespread protests from athletes, the league and coaches, many of whom condemned Trumps comments.
The president continued his assault on the sports world over the weekend and into Tuesday with a series of tweets slamming NFLs ratings and encouraging fans to boycott upcoming games.

The DOJ should investigate NFL players for their attack on American citizens.
Again?
Hell. They won’t even investigate Obama, Clinton, Rice, Lynch, Holder and the rest of those Communists for their assaults on the American People or their Acts of Treason.
The president’s bully pulpit is not a law, not an executive order, not a request for prosecution or court suit, nor a request for legislation or executive agency action.
So the president’s bully pulpit neither having nor requesting the force of law is not action that enters any investigatory cause by Congress or the DOJ.
The president gets to have his personal opinion, the same as everyone else, and when it neither seeks nor employs the force of law, it does not enter the arena of law.
The legislators who want Trump statement’s regarding the NFL events investigated ought to be ashamed for voicing a demand that is so ignorant of the law and the Constitution.
The had to fundamentally misread the statute, which discusses a president taking OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT ACTION.
I feel like Obama came close to that from time to time. Trump just said what he thought, which isn’t covered by the statute.
How did these Democrats feel when Obama actually used the power of the presidency to steal shares of GM from private citizens and give them to union auto workers?
I don’t recall a single one of those sacks asking the DOJ to look into it.
There was no threat.
The “trying to influence” cannot be said to be “partisan” as the major party affiliations stand on both sides of the issue, no matter where Mr Trump stands.
The democrats are making a big mistake here. Wait until they find out how the majority of people feel about the issue.
Did he sick the IRS on them or something?
Some already have, Sessions response...crickets chirping
Thanks EdnaMode.
Democrat men are such girly boys. Seriously, when did American men become such p#ssies? Barack Obama is a classic example. 20 years ago, nobody would tolerate a man who didnt stand for they anthem. Now they are lauded for marching with people dressed up like vaginas. My grandfather wouldnt understand any of this..
