My friend’s daughter-in-law drove up from Florida during Irma. She carried gas cans in car. Felt she had no choice as supply was very undependable.

Anyone know the best/safest way to do that? Type of cap etc.

They need to be secured outside of the passenger compartment in a well-ventilated space. Most who transport extra fuel do so with containers affixed to the tailgate of overland-style SUV’s, using gas canisters designed for that purpose. Carrying home-style gas cans inside a vehicle over long distances is a recipe for disaster.
