Before performing a medley of his classic hits like Higher Ground, Signed, Sealed, Delivered Im Yours, and Overjoyed, at the Global Citizen Festival, Stevie Wonder made a passionate speech about unity saying, It is only through life we can make life happen through ourselves and each other. He added, Our global brothers and sisters, I didnt come here to preach, but Im telling you, our spirits must be in the right place all the time.
After encouraging everyone to stand down bigotry and condemn sexism, he insisted that everyone find love. Then with the help of his son Kwame, he said, Im taking a knee for America not just one knee, but both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, and leaders of our world before serving up a musical meal of his hits.
The taking of knee may or may not have been a nod to Colin Kaepernicks silent protest of the National Anthem during NFL games which has been making headlines as of late. Donald Trump recently went on a Twitter rant about the kneeling saying that NFL players who kneel should be fired.
The music legend has been outspoken when it comes to social and environmental advocacy. During the Hand In Hand telethon for Hurricane Harvey, Wonder made a similar speech saying regardless of race, religion, political affiliation or sexual preference that we must help those devastated by the storms. He also took a jab at climate change deniers saying, Anyone who believes theres no such thing as global warming must be blind or unintelligent. Lord, please save us all.
I used to like Stevie Wonder. I still like his old music.
Now he’s bald, fat and ugly, wears clothes like Hillary Clinton and hasn’t written anything good for a very long while.
Also, eight tiresome years of smug black celebrities going to the White House to entertain smug obozo and smug mooch has all but snuffed out any respect I once had for them.
Young African Americans would be wise to reject today’s black celebrities as role models - they are complete a-holes and their success has totally gone to their heads.
Never bought any of his records so have nothing to take out and shoot! Screw the bastard!!!
Last year, it’s ‘hands up, don’t shoot’; now it’s ‘take a knee for a minority’...geez...what’s next?
If you do, he'll never see it coming.
True; he has one helluva blind spot about civil rights and blacks getting mistreated.
Like slaves of old they choose to “bend the knee” to the leftist plantation owners, not stand in pride to salute the symbol of what makes them free.
