Irish town refuses to remove Confederate plaque [Tuam, Co. Galway; Richard Dowling]

The only town in Ireland to have a plaque commemorating a Confederate Army war hero on a public building is set to keep the memorial in place despite intensive lobbying from the United States.

Councillors in Tuam, Co Galway, have been accused of caring more about the image of the town than the search for truth or justice after deciding to keep the plaque in memory of Major Richard “Dick” Dowling at the Town Hall. Dowling rented slaves, including a 12-year-old boy, for his restaurant and hotel business in Houston, Texas.

The matter was raised at a meeting of the Municipal District Council on Monday afternoon, but never went to a vote following objections to its removal.

“The mood in the town is that people don’t give a damn about it,” Councillor Donagh Killilea (Fianna Fáil) told IrishCentral on Tuesday evening. “When this plaque was erected, the people of the town only wanted to commemorate a man who made a success of himself in America. It’s honoring a guy who left extreme poverty on the outskirts of Tuam and managed to survive 180 years ago by joining an army. My understanding is that he was only in the Confederate Army for a couple of years, and that he became a very successful businessman in Houston.” …

The highest-ranking Irishman to serve in the US Civil War was Patrick Cleburn, born in Killumney (Co. Cork) in 1828, died at the battle of Franklin on Nov. 30, 1864. He rose from private to general. Nothing to commemorate him in his birthplace?

I’ll bet BLM and Antifa are already sending a bunch of angry Negros to pick a fight over this ...

They will regret it.

There is a plaque denoting Cleburne’s birthplace on Bride Park Cottage in Killumney.

You and Michelle Obama - never missing an opportunity to slander American patriots.

Does your disapproval for hiring practices extend to other US presidents who employed slave labor? Would that Include George Washington?

My post 12 did not express approval or disapproval; I simply asked a question. I didn't think there would be anything wrong asking a question.

Reread my post in its entirety:

‘Didn't the Lincoln administration use rented slave labor to construct part of the U.S. Capitol during the war to “free the slaves”. Hopefully someone that knows more about history than I do can comment.’

“Your posting history precedes you.”

Regardless, how did my post 12 slander an American patriot?

Please explain.

Never mind that Ibrahim Halawa guy, who the gay PM just lobbied Egypt to release because he’s an “Irish citizen”. The guy went down to “protest” Morsi’s ouster, i.e. cause trouble.
